Stepping into the TARDIS: Series 1

15 minutes ago, through the persistent generosity of DWF, I am beginning my initial foray into the new Doctor Who. Why? Because I've found that many folks with similar tastes to mine recommend the show. Because of all the newer shows these days, this sounds the most like one I would enjoy.

So here sits me, watching "Rose". Outside of being rather smitten by Billie Piper .. I'm quite enjoying it. From the Doctor's "Nice to meet you Rose. Run for your life!" to Clive's explanation of his research of the Doctor, it's fun. What I'd like to do is offer my own comments, observations and more importantly ... questions. Advice? I'll be glad of it. Critiques? I welcome them.

Let's have some fun! Run for your life!!

Welcome to the club!

And if you like that episode, there's some corkers yet to come...

:D

It's quite fun thinking that some alien Consciousness is controlling all of the world's plastic!

BTW... the font used on the subtitles (I'm here in the US and thi sis a R1 DVD), is a mite odd. Lower font "l" look almost like an upper case L. Strange, that.

And if you ever get to the classic series, you'll see them in two more stories (Spearhead from Space & Terror of the Autons, both Third Doctor serials).

Enjoy the ride! :D

BTW... I don't intend to start a new thread for each episode.

It will be interesting to learn British slang and other terminology, such as "A-lists". Rose mentioned that one when she was deciding whether to go with the Doctor, I think.

1 x 01 - "Rose", 1 x 02 - "The End of the World"

1 x 01 - Rose has spunk. Delightfully pretty and common. I liked her momentary hesitation at whether to accept the Doctor's offer. Then she realizes that Mickey hasn't been much of a boyfriend.. or maybe that it's all he's been. With the Doctor, she might get to enjoy attacks by mannequins. . The effects, were somewhat lower in execution but it almost seemed designed that way. They didn't detract or overwhelm the story. And that is a great thing by me. I did detect a sort of ecological reference, with the Doctor's explanation of why the Nestene Consciousness came to Earth. Good point to make, so long as it isn't overdone in future episodes.

Good start, as Piper and Eccleston seem to work well together.

1 x 02 - "The End of the World"

Okay, less humor this time around and more poignance... and more effective. The way that the Doctor got into the "party" is excellent! Psychic paper! Now I could use plenty of that!. The relationship the Doctor shares with Jabe .... very touching. Rose's lamentation over missing the Earth's passing... also moving. However... it's as if she still doesn't quite understand time travel. That's actually good to see. The special effects looked nice again, but I am always a sucker for good space shots. The platform's set... did seem to be very much like a bank or hotel from today. But then that's almost a benefit. One of the charms of the original show was its cheap sets and effects. That is not meant as an insult, btw. If anything it's my failing to find the right words. Anyways... that type of approach is in a sense a connection to the original. And I always appreciate that. Honoring your ancestors.

And I still am smitten with Billie Piper. :adore:

The End Of The World was filmed in part in a church and it's really the start of the Bad Wolf storyline, it has two Harry Potter references in it and boasts some 200 visual effect shots from the Mill and it's the first time we see the Face Of Boe.

BTW, I'm glad you're liking the show so far.

Enjoy the ride Neroon.

Years ago when I was getting into B5, your comments, suggestions and answers to questions were a great help. Hope I (and we in the Doctor Who forum) can do the same in return.

RUN!

I envy you, I'd love to be able to experience the whole thing for the first time again (though experiencing it for the 27th or 76th time is pretty good too, all things considered).

I have said the same thing to so many people newly introduced to B5.

I wondered that about "Bad Wolf" because I can remember taking notice when it came up tonight. Remind me again in which scene that was?

I've long been convinced that I'd like the show, because of so many friends with similar tastes who'd recommended it. There's a long way yet to go, but it's started out encouragingly well.

1 x 03 - "The Unquiet Dead"

Well, it didn't take long before Rose got to go into the past.
It was fun to see the glee in Rose as she gets to go to that different time. How she interacted with Gwyneth, showed Rose has a truly sensitive heart but is in some ways still a young girl. 19 perhaps but still a girl in some ways. Gwyneth's sacrifice was handled nicely, not too over the top. The Gelth somehow bothered me before they revealed what they truly are. Not sure what it was though....

Adding Charles Dickens to the plot was superbly done. Good to see the rational mind at work ... but one opened to the magic in the world. Nicely poignant tha the was to die in the coming year.

There's also a sort of pleasantry in having the Doctor miss his mark. Landing in 1869 London instead of 1860 Naples shows he isn't perfect. LOVED his used of "What the Shakespeare".

One note... I detected the Bad Wolf reference here. Was there any allusion in "End of the World" ?

Re: 1 x 03 - "The Unquiet Dead"

I think one of the aliens mentions "The Bad Wolf Scenario". Or something :D

Well this is going to be fun. I love these 'through the eyes of a newbie' sort of threads. :)

Thougn it must be tough trying to avoid spoilers.

That was 1869 Cardiff, capital city of Wales, actually. ;) I only mention that because that piece of info will be important later on.

Yep, it was Moxx who first mentioned it in The End Of The World just before the Doctor revealed that it was Cassandra who's behind the whole thing.

They were in Cardiff and yes there's something important about where they landed also the Gelth mentioned the war something the Doctor touched on at the of The End Of The World. And I thought Simon Callow did an excellent job as Charles Dickens a role he's played before on stage.

Re: 1 x 03 - "The Unquiet Dead"

Cardiff. Apologies. I was a mite distracted by watching the baseball game whilke posting that. :o
