STC gets 501(c)(3) status

STC just sent emails to their IndieGoGo and Kickstarter backers saying that they've been approved by the IRS for 501(c)(3) status retroactive to 12/31/14:

The IRS has approved our application for non-profit 501(c)(3) status retroactive to December 31, 2014! This means, if you made a donation to our KIRKstarter 2.0 in January – February 2015 or are making a donation to our current campaign on Indiegogo or through the “Donate” button on our website, you will have the right to deduct your donation from your taxable income. Please consult your tax professional on how to go about this.

(Me again)
Remember that you can only deduct contributions in excess of the fair market value of any goods and services you received as a consequence of your donation. So if you contributed at a level that got you a script, or a DVD, or props, or a set visit, etc., you probably can't deduct the entire amount you contributed.

Alec Peters is probably peeing himself right now.

"This is how it is done!" indeed, Darth Garth!

Won't lie - I was very worried at the begining of this 50th Anniversary year about the overall status/fate of fanfilms in general but since the Axanar lawsuit we have had several releases with many more in the works, it seems more clearer now and it seems to be business as usual (or rather NO business as usual!) :)

Yes, I think the lessons are clear:

1) Don't take donations using the Star Trek license then build yourself a luxurious studio/offices with wall to wall carpet, an expensive telecom system, then announce you are going to make "for profit" films from said studio.

2) Don't run your private, for profit, business from the same space as your allegedly "non-profit" movie studio (which you've already announced is going to be making for profit movies)

3) Don't give your girlfriend, along with your buddies, a salary... raiseds all kinds of questions.

4) A $9600+ car budget for your "fan film" probably isn't a good idea either... raises lots of ethical questions.

5) Getting over $1.2 million in donations, then suggesting you are making your own, "independent" Star Trek film probably isn't a good idea.

Just some thoughts...

This is the first reply? Is there a Godwin's Law for Alec Peters?

Neil
Are you trying to say this thread has been 'Axanar'd'?;)

Still interesting to see the Star Trek Fan Film group Mr. Peters so often disparages; actually DO something to cement their status in line with CBS unwritten rules - especially something Mr. Peters likes to claim his Axanar group was supposedly doing (yeah, right.)

Happy to see this. STC is definitely my favorite of the fan film products. In my opinion, it's the most faithful adaptation (in spirit, especially, but also aesthetically) of the original series. It's rare when a fan film is actually about something. Additionally, the creators seem very pure in their attentions, accountable for their dollars, and likable as people.

Looking forward to seeing more from them.
