Hello anyone,

99% of my Trek interest relied on television or movies. And growing older and more impatient, I really want to give some novels a chance to fufill my 'fix'. The last books I've read were over 30 years ago ('James Blish?') and I was not too impressed. Whenever I go to the bookstore I am really intimidated by the amount of material out there and don't quite know where to jump in.
I like all eras of Trek and morbidly curious about 'The Return' , more for the premise than that Shatner was the author. Is that a good place to start? Maybe TOS to begin? I love reading the posts here for guidence, but again, there is so much the choose from-a good problem I guess.
Thanks in advance-

Here's what we told the last guy who asked :)

Just rememer that there are about 600 novels altogether. Just like TV/film Trek, some are great, some okay and some terrible. Don't judge them all bad if you dislike your first!

if you like TOS, be sure to read Vanguard, it's an original series, set in the 23rd century and is about 12 kinds of awesome.

If you like TOS, I would recommend Margaret Wander Bonanno's Strangers from the Sky, which is so good I keep rereading it.

If you're interested in Vulcans, there's Spock's World by Diane Duane and Sarek by A.C. Crispin.

I also like The Prime Directive by the Reeves-Stevens and The Lost Years by J.M. Dillard.

Mere Anarchy, Burning Dreams, Constellations, and Excelsior: Forged in Fire have been the best TOS stuff I've read. I'm also expecting to love the Rihanssu saga, which will be the next TOS I tackle. I wouldn't bother with The Return. The idea of Kirk coming back in the 24th century could have been amazing, but the execution of that story and the whole series following has been beyond poor. Way too out there.
