'Stargate: Universe' Will Get Darker, Tougher

Cooper's partner-in-crime, Brad Wright, also revealed that the semi-depressing nature of the series and the overall tone comes from telling a story of heroes in the making rather than the exploits of an intrepid team like the previous incarnations of the franchise. And with such a concept, it becomes easier to delve into the inner workings of the human condition as each character is flawed and caught between a rock and a hard place.

Blah blah, this show has gotten boring and now going darker, sorry i perfer SG1 type of story telling than this .

The funny thing is Stargate Universe isn't even that dark. The show has this "grim" atmosphere to it, but that's entirely artificial. The few times the show goes for real darkness (Young's attempted murder of Rush, the mutiny, Eli and the Gang being left behind, etc.) it restores the status quo by the next episode. Stargate SG-1, despite its lighthearted nature, was actually far darker.

I think I would welcome a darker Stargate Universe. Start taking risks show.

SGU's problem is when they try to be "dark" they just come off as depressing and emo. Case in point, the episode Time when Eli and Rush discuss death and the (non) existence of an afterlife. Sweet fuck, I was longing for Jack O'Neill style sarcasm or Rodney McKay style antics at that point. When I watch Stargate I don't want to be reminded that my body is going to one day be a nightclub for worms, nor do I want to ponder what might lay beyond.

They should start killing off main characters, preferably out of the blue, just like BSG did at times or like George R.R. Martin does in Song Of Ice And Fire series ...
I like this show but it can get very emo at times, especially with all those montages to some crap emo music.

Spells dead baby for starters. I agree that they need somebody with a sense of sarcasm. Eli is a bit too wet and, while Park has her moments, she isn't on screen enough to have an impact (she's used even less than Benson in Soap - although he went on to get his own series...). That just leaves Jack and he only appears a couple of times each season to berate Young.

Killing characters is fine but they need to establish them first so that we actually care. At the moment most of the supporting cast is grey. We've already lost several people (through the Stargate - presumably to be seen later - and on the planet) and I can't honestly say that I feel their absence.

I have to agree with all the above comments. The writers have done a terrible job establishing the characters and developing them aside from Rush, Eli, and Young, with Rush really getting the best development and Young becoming increasing nonsensical as the show progressed, despite the fact that he's a Colonel, which means he should be far more competent than he is. Everyone else has had practically nonexistent development, aside from TJ and Greer, who get rather cliche stuff, partially due to how slow the show is and how much time was spent fucking around on Earth with the stones, stuff that has had practically no impact on the characters' relationships with each other. There are so many things that are unexplained about the characters that I think there should've been an entire season just on Icarus to establish everything before they got on the Destiny.

Also, the producers are saying that Destiny has some sort of destination, which I don't mind, but I think it would've been darker if Destiny was nothing special, just one of thousands of ships sent out by the Ancients to explore the universe. All the sacrifices and plotting to get to Destiny would be utterly invalidated by that fact and just highlight how stupid the Alliance was for trying to take it.

SGU is VERY dark...there are hardly any working lights on Destiny. And that's about the extent of it's darkness. It tries to be dark, but if you want a show to be dark, some of the things that happen must be permanent. The reset button and darkness/gritty reality don't go hand in hand.
I hope we see Teal'c next season, but that probably won't happen...from Atlantis, I wouldn't mind seeing McKay argue with Rush but I can't think of any reason for any of the others to appear.

The only characters from Atlantis who could logically appear on SGU are McKay (due to him being a genius and and expert on Ancient technology) and maybe Woolsey (due to his IOA connections).

McKay seems more likely to me, since he is the more popular character. And a McKay episode could be fun, watching him and Rush get into heated arguments over which one of them is smarter. Or because of his fetish for blondes he gets distracted everytime he's around TJ, which in turn pisses Young off. Maybe have him swap bodies with Eli, so we can see McKay in that "You Are Here" t-shirt for comedic value. Damn, this is practically writing itself.

The Stargate Fan's on Gateworld are gonzo about this series. Apparently the Producers can't do a thing wrong in they're eyes but then that's the nature of the fanatic.

At first they called SGU "hardhitting" and a "fresh take on the Stargate series",
Right now the ratings have dropped through the floor and SyFy is finding new and creative ways to spin the down turn through the DVR Live ratings.

I question the support of the DVR ratings. Do you really want to advertise your show as , "don't have to see it right now TV" as opposed to "MUST SEE TV". For goodness sake it's Friday what else do most have to do but go out and party or sit at home? The Stargates flourished there with the rest of Geek-dom supporting them...why not SGU

Haven't the Gateworld mods pretty much cracked down on vocal disapproval of SGU? I've skimmed SGU general discussion forum and there doesn't seem to be any real discussion about the shortcomings about SGU.

Yeah, Gateworld a couple months ago in essence did away with posting anything negative about SGU. It made me sad because Gateworld is widely read by people who work on SGU, and hearing the fans tell you what is wrong can improve the show, if you have a thick enough skin to take the criticism.

Now the site is just a shill for SGU where you can find softball interviews and the most recent clips.

That' not exactly true guys.
Gateworld did start a crack down on SGU hating. But they still accept valid criticism on the series. Unfortunately to be objective individual moderators such as Skydiver (the main woman) one or two other are extremely prejudicial with their actions. They sometimes don't have just cause for their moderation in that they act before anything has happened.

Gateworld has now between structured to separate the SGU fans from the rest of Stargate fans. It's like Stargate Apartheid.

The creator of Gateworld has expressed his discouragement of having to do so because of massive amount of hateful post on Gateworld and on the Forum, saying that he's let it go one for long enough and it has threaten to make him shut it all down.

I know what the formal stance of Gateworld is, and it was interesting to read what the lead admin and other folks had to say about it. And it is their site, they can do what they want with it.

And while it might still technically be within the rules to critique the show in certain ways, what their crackdown has done is create a chilling effect on all negative discussions or critiques of SGU. Gateworld used to have some interesting debate and give and take, nowadays that is mostly gone. And the website is far less dynamic because of it.

I could care less about this or that "thunk" thread or so and so appreciation thread. I want to read what people think of SGU, warts and all. And Gateworld no longer offers that, at least not entirely.

Thank you, that's exactly it. I couldn't quite place my finger on what I meant by "artificial darkness", but this is exactly it. The show isn't dark; it's emo.

Stargate SG-1 and SG:A were just as dark as Universe, but the difference is the characters on those shows were emotionally mature and confident enough to overcome their problems. Universe interprets this as being too perfect, so they give us a bunch of fuck ups who crack under the pressure and whine about having no friends. That isn't darkness. Well, it is, but not the good kind of darkness.

The writers of Universe should really check out Babylon 5, A Song of Fire & Ice, or Children of Earth to see how you do darkness without Wangst.

Maybe if they add better opening credits and played that "Are you man enough? Big and Bad enough?" song over some explosions and stuff.

Also, whenever Eli isn't around, some character should ask "Where's Eli?"
