Yeah, hoped for more, but maybe this could lead to something else.

A current show that could also wrap up Universe for instance...

From the official announcement: "Young Catherine embarks on an unexpected adventure to unlock the mystery of what lies beyond the Stargate in order to save Earth from unimaginable darkness."

This line makes me think that the series is going to retcon a new adventure into Catherine's backstory. Basically, it is going to make up some adventure that Catherine went on that we've never heard about before. I am guessing the adventure will be more of an Indiana Jones type adventure where Catherine explores archaeological clues about the stargate. I doubt that Catherine will travel through the gate since that would contradict what we know from the stargate movie and SG1 series. So I am expecting a series without gate travel that will basically just give us nice but non-essential backstories, only tangentially related to the stargate universe.

The poster for the series shows a woman approaching an active stargate, which may mean nothing, but it could mean she travels through it. That would contradict canon, but perhaps she loses her memory, or they come up with some other explanation as to why she fails to mention using the stargate.

It seems to be a "soft" reboot; they"ll make a story that will get people interested in watching; depending on the ratings we could see a new SG1 series.
Frankly, an SG1 reboot seems to be the most likely and efficient way to bring back Stargate to mainstream TV (or streaming) - and short form webseries may be the best way to judge how popular the show will be.

That's a terrible idea, the new threats part.

That was the hole idea of the two Stargate direct-to-video films: tying up once and for all both the main antagonists. For good. The last thing I want is another universe-threatening bad guy/race that we have to deal with all over again. It's beyond tiresome after three series.

I might like to see Stargate take on sort of a "MacGyver" like role:

O'Neill is now in charge of the program, which has become more philanthropic-supported, while still being under military watch and reigns. The new 'gaters (not opposed to familiar faces being used) go around helping other races in exchange for knowledge of technology, maybe take high-paying people on the adventure of their life, etc.

It gives the chance to have some serious episodes that aren't bogged down by constant threat of war or fighting from a re-occurring bad guy. More Star Trek like commentary of life and people, helping others, maybe some danger here and there from stepping on the wrong toes.

    Many possibilities.

So you are thinking that the web series will ignore continuity and create brand new backstories for Catherine and SG1 and if it is popular, create a new SG1 show with these backstories as a prequel? That would make sense.

As Tealc would say, "indeed". They could do a direct sequel to SG1 that takes place say 20 years after the end of the SG1 series, or a sequel to Ark of Truth where the SGC explores the Ori home galaxy, or a sequel to Atlantis... There are so many possibilities!

They said at the panel the story is canon though, so that wouldn't make much sense.

This is kind of disappointing, either we're getting a SG series with no gate travel, and no aliens, or they're going to have to come up with some convoluted reason why they had this whole big adventure before SG-1 and never mentioned it.

So a new live action prequel the show's producers say is canon but it doesn't look like it fits in before what's gone before? I'm having flashbacks to the Discovery forum.

I'm pleased Stargate is getting dusted off. I think it's a wonderful premise, my favourite Sci-Fi premise ever, in fact. And I would love it if a rebooted SG-1 series were to emerge from this. No gimmicks, far flung galaxies or extra chevrons, just a team going to planets in this galaxy 'by means of a device known as a Stargate'. They could even reset the Goa'uld threat if they did it differently enough this time around.

I think they"ll retcon what needs to be retconned. Its a 100 minute show spread over 10 episodes.

Yup - the Goa'uld got tired after a while. One idea that was floated a few years back was to have a new team with new adventures and a brand new SG1 after Mitchel and Carter got promoted off the show.
That would let them borrow from existing mythology aka Stargate TNG rather than doing a wholesale replacement; although I'd actually prefer an entirely new show at this point.

If we were talking SG-1 only, I'd probably be on board with a continuation. But with Atlantis taking all of the mystery out of what was, I thought, SG-1's best arc (the 'Fifth Race' stuff) and having the Ancients turn out to just be idiots in lamé jackets, I'm happy to reset that out of existence. By the end of the run of SG1/SGA/SGU, it all seemed like we'd used up all the mystery out there in the galaxy, and were left with a sort of proto-Star Trek show about a spacefaring human race. They got the full whack of Asgard tech in the finale, for crying out loud!

A reset show could redo the Goa'uld to be a bit more mysterious and a bit less easily beaten, and recapture the 'wonders of stepping out into the universe' thing that I loved about the first 5 or 6 years of the show.

Keep in mind Stargate had it far share off alt-timeline (Moebius and Continuum come to mind) and alt-dimensions stories as well. There could be an alt-timeline going on where Catherine figured out how to activate the Stargate when it was found, That , in turn, could lead to a new series that generally erases the whole Sg1/Atl/Universe timeline as we know it. basically its Abrams Trek but with Stargate.

IMO, a good continuation would be the best. Problem is Stargate had basically started to become Star Trek with all it new tech and ships (BC304, F302, etc..). The need a way to cut the tech down, this will help associate it better with your average viewer. Also keeping the Stargate program hidden from the public became tiresome.

As much as I like SG-1, Atlantis & Universe (for the most part) I'd be quite happy if they just use the first few minutes of the movie (and the general notion of aliens posing as ancient gods) as a jumping off point and pretty much ignore everything else. That doesn't mean to say that they can't nod to or reference certain things from the old shows, but on a case-by-case, cherry picked basis. Canon and continuity are overrated. ;)

I've often thought about if I was to reboot SG-1 as a movie, I'd have it that the first System Lord seen would be Apophis instead of Ra, and hist host would be a reptilian alien that vaguely resembles the Serpent Guard helmet. And I pictured a scene where O'Neill has managed to get a staff weapon and shoots Apophis in the chest, apparently killing him. O'Neill would then try to turn Tea'lc and the Jaffa, saying that they now have proof the Goa'uld aren't gods. Apophis suddenly rises, eyes flash, O'Neill just has time to go, "Oh crap." and gets hand-deviced across the room, cementing the idea to the Jaffa that the Goa'uld are all-powerful.

This looks like the best idea they could have come up with.

Maybe she finds a third gate on earth and it gets destroyed at the end. PLus maybe she goes through in 1969 which would still let it be okay she didn't know about the Stargate program getting started back up in the 90's. What she learns is one the reasons why she is working with the military when we first see her in the movie.

I'm a Stargate fan, but I won't bother with this. Pre-SG-1 stuff I really don't care about (and I'm including the movie in that), so this is almost as unappealing as the rumored Emmerich reboot.

In fairness it wasn't the somewhat limited array of planets that interested me, I always imagined they were terraformed with a very limited menu of options, but I did enjoy the concept of Earth, the new kid on the block with loud guns and big ideas but not a lot of common sense or tact, the embodiment of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, dipping our collective toe into a big galaxy full of things we didn't understand and quite often getting it bitten, but sometimes making a friend and learning something along the way. I loved it, and still do really. That's why I lost interest gradually as that dissipated and humans raced ahead and became conquerors and galactic powers through one Deux ex machina after another. I much preferred it when it was our team hopelessly out of their depth being fobbed off by the Nox.
