'Stargate' Brings Lesbians Back To Prime Time

Wow, the worst way to handle gay characters is to wait till they're dead to out them. If you're going to be that cowardly, just don't do it at all.

You mean like Cain on Battlestar Galactica? :techman:

This seems to be all i've heard about SGU. The priority of the promotion i've seen seems to have been 1) HOT LESBIANS 2) Oh yeah there's also gates and ships and other Stargate stuff in the show too.

No offense.

Which begs the question:

Why weren't the trailers composed simply of lesbian makeout scenes and exploding spaceships?

Come on.

Really? I think I've heard "new", "dark", "edgy" and "gritty" a billion times.

Considering this is the first I've heard of the lesbian angle and I've seen a lot of promotion from Sci-Fi about this show over the past few months I'd say Lesbians is not #1 on the list of ways the show is being promoted.

Now that being said I don't like the fact that her partner is a recurring character. Can't we have Ming-Na be a female Kirk and hook up with a random alien babe every couple weeks?

:techman:

My lower half thinks this is awesome. Meanwhile, my upper half thinks this is just stupid, unless its handled well, with focus on develop of the relationship and not on the "zomg, teh lesbians!" shtick.

Yeah, like that'll happen.

^Define "handled well." Frankly, romance has always been an afterthought at best in this franchise. I was never particularly fond of the whole Jack O'Neill/Samantha Carter mess. The Daniel/Vala thing was hit & miss. The writers flirted with the idea of pairing Sheppard up with either Weir or Teyla but never went through with either. Frankly, their best romance, IMO, was McKay/Keller, and even that strained believability. (Why would such a sweet woman, or ANY woman for that matter, put up with this asshole?) If the lesbianism here is handled poorly, that will be par for the course.

Or Dumbledore.

Or, while she's not dead, outing Serena Southerlyn in the final moments of her final scene on Law & Order right after Arthur Branch fired her.

I thought the Sam/Pete relationship was well done.

Yeah the latter is what I was thinking about. But the example of Cain was pretty stupid as well...I guess in that case, the excuse is she didn't have much screen time before getting the axe, so if parts of her backstory were glossed over, eh.

Since it's a given the romance angle will be a flop, they might as well just go whole hog for the "scoring points for being daring" motivation, which would require them to have gay male characters because they don't get points for lesbians and in fact I think they should get points subtracted. :p

I'm pretty sure that Rowling never thought much about Dumbledore's sexuality, and just decided to retcon it in as a stab at all the Christian fundies who'd been railing against her over the years.

That makes no sense. Why would that be a stab towards "Christian fundies". If anything, it would give them more fuel for the fire.

Uh, no, apples and oranges there. Cain's sexuality was revealed at the beginning of the flashback episode Razor. So, yes, she was already dead but her story was just beginning.

Never the less she was already dead, which is not the case on Stargate Universe.
