Starfleet Captain

James Wright

Commodore
Commodore
Besides those Captains commanding starships, what other commands could Captains hold, other than engineering?

James

(Dedicated) Medical Vessels et al. Starfleet Diplomatic Corps vessels. The sky's the limit. Why do you ask? Do you have a specific idea you'd like help with?

I'm just plain curious, I just remembered Sisko, he's a Captain and commands DS9!

James
He actually was Commander originally. He was promoted mid-serie just after getting the Defiant.

I suppose non-command Captains would become head of departments within large infrastructures like R&D or become teachers at the academy.

I loved DS9, but I always thought this was dumb. Space station commander is at least a Commodore's billet - need to have the authority to boss starship captains around.
Only it wasn't a Starbase in the prewar period just an orbital mining station which Bajor took from the Cardassians in the peace agreement. Sure Federation ships would stop there but his command initially was more of a Bajor assistance program. You could say it was a slap in the face of the Bajorans that the Federation thought sending a lowly Commander and not an Admiral was appropiate.

His job was to assist the bajorans in their recovery after the occupation and then he'd be reassigned afterwards.

James

It seems that the adjuncts of Admirals are Captains during war time. In the Dominion Occupation Arc in Season 6 Sisko was reassigned to Starbase 375 as Admiral Ross' adjunct because the previous one was promoted to Admiral.

I suppose on a ship commanded by an Admiral, their XO could be a Captain...

I think a lot of people forget that the station was on loan to SF by the Bajorans and had the leave if the Bajorans ever asked them to, as seen in "The Circle" and at the beginning of the war. Honest mistake though, I make it all the time.
