It's the animated Trek equivalent to "SeaLab 2021". I could imagine this airing on "Adult Swim" if it were not for the near impossible legal huddles.

I would like to see Kirk and the TOS crew deal with the Old Ones in a dramatic narrative, rather than comedic.

That would be quite some crossover.
