Star Wars Millennium Falcon (Novel)

Mr Light

Admiral
Admiral
This is the new hardcover novel just released, which takes place after Legacy of the Force.

I didn't really care for this book, and I'm pretty forgiving of anything Star Wars. Love the Prequels! :p This is really the first post-NJO book that I disliked (unless you count how disappointing Invincible was!).

It was a completely unimportant story, basically a framing device for a series of short flashbacks showing previous owners of the Falcon. The story itself wasn't very interesting or important and there was almost no action. Worse yet, half or more of the pages star a new character who at point was a Falcon pilot in the old days. It was a real struggle to be interested in the characters starring this nobody.

It's not even a good "interim" story, either. We learn next to nothing about the state of the Star Wars world in the aftermath of LOTF. All we learn is that Daala doesn't like the Jedi (shock) and is trying to outlaw them or something. An Imperial? Outlaw the Jedi? Wow.

And the ending was a complete disappointment.
Spoilers here!

The long long fabled treasure they were searching for all these decades turned out to be a plaque on a wall... and it was a fake of it! Wow. Fascinating stuff.

Not to mention the entire novel they strongly imply that the Falcon is sentient or alive and that it flies itself and influences events around it... but this has zero impact by the end of the book, whether its true or not. I was hoping the ending would reveal the ship was alive or something. Sigh.

There was also one truly bizarre mention where Allana calls on Jacen's strength/spirit to survive and there's an internal thought bit where Han thinks that Jacen's spirit is still alive somewhere in the galaxy trying to redeem itself. WTF?!

Meh, heck with Millennium Falcon. Luke Skywalker and the Shadows of Mindor should have been out by now, not that crappy LOTF wrap-up! :scream:

Er, sorry. :p

This is the first time since Vector Prime that I can't be bothered to pick up the most recent adventure of the classic cast right away. Maybe I'll get it when it hits paperback. Maybe.

On the other hand, I am all charged up about LS&tSoM!!!

I too am anxiously awaiting the awkwardly titled Mindor book. It's by the author of Shatterpoint. It's one of those rare close-to-OT-timeline books. It's got darksiders fighting Luke during the Rebellion era. And it's Luke as a military commander in the Rebellion. All fascinating stuff!

Only thing in this book I'm really interested in is seeing Lando Jr.

Thanks for the info. I was considering picking this up, but now I can wait for the paperback.

Agreed, agreed, a thousand times agreed.

I feel a little dirty...but I was non-plussed about the plot to begin with, and spoilers haven't helped.

Meh, I think Lucas completely missed a trick with the history of the Falcon in the prequels.

Imagine how much fun it would have been if in Episode One, it was the Falcon that was won in the pod race, it was Obi Wan that made the Kessel Run in the shortest distance evading a separatist blockade, and then finally the Falcon is lost in another bet.

So that in Episode four when Han Solo says, "You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon?" Obi Wan's wry comment "Should I have?" would have been priceless.

Yes, well, Matt Stover needed the time to finish the book. Frankly, it's something of a miracle that it's still coming out in December; he didn't deliver the manuscript until sometime between 18 September and 5 October.

That would have been pretty funny.

Millennium Falcon has a framing story set post-LOTF, but it is much more like an anthology. Tales of the Millennium Falcon would have been an apt title. Yes, these are characters we've never seen or heard of before, but their stories captured me in the short chapters they had to tell them in.

Regarding the quest, what would have been a worthy treasure for them to find? Having read Han Solo and the Lost Legacy, I was expecting something similar to what we got. Luceno even sets us up for the revelation by explicitly referencing Xim's treasure.

Those looking for the next big piece of SW action should wait for the Fate of the Jedi series. Millennium Falcon serves as a pleasant interlude or side story, and it's a welcome change from the doom and gloom of the post-Survivor's Quest time period. The nature of the book may not make it worth a hardcover purchase, but I recommend giving it a read, if only to see Luceno weave a couple of decent references to The Crystal Star into the tale.

Quite frankly, The Crystal Star is something I'd rather not be reminded of.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

It was a 'meh' book that completely failed to live up to whatever 'event' hype was supposed to accompany it.

I think that a 7/10 is slightly on the generous side. It just lacked any...well spark. I didn't really get to feel for anything that was going on really.

And I'm with captcalhoun that if you want a good SW novel, read the RC novels.

I really enjoyed Millennium Falcon. I thought it had a lot to offer for its length. I'd suggest it to any Star Wars fan.
