Star Trekkin' by The Firm

Eagan

Ensign
Newbie
This was a novelty record released in the UK in 1987. It eventually spent two weeks at number 1 in the British singles chart, and was the 9th best selling single of the year.

It's occurred to me that being nearly forty years ago, there are probably many people on here who have never heard (of) it, especially as it never made the American charts.

Even after all this time and dozens of listens, it still makes me laugh every time I hear it.

So, if any of you haven't heard it, I recommend tracking it down (it's available on Spotify and Apple Music) and giving it a listen. Anyone who is familiar with the original series and has a sense of humour should appreciate it. Having said that, I'm aware that British and American senses of humour don't always align, so maybe you won't share my enthusiasm; there's only one way to find out.

Also, the sleeve to the 7" vinyl single (I still have mine) was pretty cool:

One of the pubs we were in the other week had various music from the 80s on the tv, and this was one of them. (Video is available on youtube too).

I remember listening to it on tape way back when :)

I remember recording this song off the radio onto a cassette tape when I was 9 or 10, trying to precisely press the record button so as not to record any ads or DJ nonsense as I didn't know how to edit recordings properly then.

This video was clearly made in a hurry and it's glorious.

Thanks for the link Orac (why didn't I think of it?)

At the time I thought the video was disappointing (though Kirk stroking the Captain's Log was funny). But with hindsight, I can't think of anything they could they have produced that would have been better?

I never much liked the video. It feels haphazard, and the hand puppets often aren't even roughly approximating the right mouth movements. The audio alone is much funnier without the visual distraction.
