Star Trek XI, whats your opinion.

i put this question in the general descussion thread, in hopes that i may get a better understanding of what the common trek fan feels about the movie. it seems to me that most trek fans dont want to even talk about the movie because they dont want to have to deal with the (quote) "chest thumpers" on either side.

I am one of those who doesn't go into that forum much, and the reason is partly because of the constant hostility. But it's also because I don't want to know all about the movie before I go see it. Apparently this makes me some sort of freak, but there it is. I'd rather be surprised by it. Why pay good money to go see a movie that I already know all about?

As for my attitude...well, here's my confession: I haven't enjoyed most of the other movies. A few have had their moments, but for the most part...meh. Pretty disappointing, in other words. So I don't have particularly high expectations about this movie, either. But I definitely plan to see it, if that's what you want to know, and from what little I've allowed myself to know, it sounds as though I have some reason for to be at least slightly optimistic that I'm going to see a movie that I enjoy at least somewhat. And hey, it's the only new Trek I'm likely to see for a while, so I don't want to miss it.

You can imagine now why I've avoided the chest-thumpers. I wouldn't please anybody, would I?

Me too. They are a rowdy group of people, but I attend the forum once in a blue moon just to see what people would say. It is crazy to see how everyone reacts in there over a movie that's not even out yet. Although there's a lot of positive attitude there, too, but I avoid it for the most part because I don't want to be spoiled.

But I am looking forward to the movie, just because it's Star Trek.

I guess I'm a chest thumper.

I said shortly after this movie was announced that I would not go to see it. But, my reasons had nothing to do with whether or not I thought the movie would be any good. I decided before this movie ever came about that I would no longer patronize Hollywood's non-stop pattern of re-cast, re-boot, re-imagined films. I have yet to see one that, quite frankly, hasn't sucked. And, I will no longer give them my hard earned dollars for a "maybe this one will be different" shot in the dark.

For the record, I haven't seen any of the latest horror flic remakes either. Nor will I.

Those are MY reasons for not seeing this movie, and mine alone.

Having said all of that, the more I read from Abrams, Orci or Kurtzman the more I tend to believe that none of them have a clue about the story they are trying to tell.

The interview a couple of weeks ago from Orci and Kurtzman on Trek vs. Star Wars left me shaking my head in disbelief. Orci commenting about the similarity between the characters in the two stories leads me to believe that he has either never watched TOS or SW, because other than the story taking place in space and there being heroes and villians, the characters and story are NOTHING alike.

For the record, I am not a hater of anybody involved in this film. I have enjoyed most of the TV work that Abrams has done (although I'm more than ready for Lost to be over) and find Fringe from the trio to be very entertaining. And, if they were creating an ORIGINAL Star Trek work (meaning all new characters and stories), I may not be as concerned. I simply don't believe that they have a firm grasp on what it is that they are trying to re-create.

Does that mean that they can't create an entertaining story? No. But, if somebody has to turn Trek into something that it's not to make it entertaining, then it's not Trek that they've made entertaining, no matter what the title says.

Some people hope this film will fail, sight unseen. Some people want it to fail, so they can say "I told you so."

My only doubt about the movie, is that the series is once again going backwards. While Enterprise did start to find its legs in season 3, a movie has a lot less time. I'm going to see it, but new people playing the iconic characters on TOS may make an unfavorable impression. I'll try to see it with an open mind, but too much deviation from the characters will pull me right out of the movie.

I loved TOS and also a great many episodes of TNG, as well as the TOS movies. I had a passing interest at best for all of the later Trek that's come along. And based upon what I've seen and heard about this new movie, I don't have much interest in it, either.

I'm not boycotting the new flick, but I probably won't actually see it until it shows up on cable.

Would that be considered a "hostile" post in that other forum?

I hardly ever go into the Trek XI forum, like JustKate said, because of the hostility (although the sombrero thread is pretty funny), but I can't wait to see the film. I'm sure I'll have a great time.

My faith in XI begins and ends with the hope that it will reignite enough of an interest in the franchise to prompt the creation of other projects.

I hate the entire idea of a prequel. I hate the idea of a new cast taking over iconic roles. And I hate the idea of Trek outsides, namely the two pieces of work who wrote Transformers, being so near to something so dear to so many people.

I will go see the movie because I want it to do well. But my expectations are somewhere around...

...here.

Here's my opinion. I am looking forward to seeing the film. The two trailers I've seen have jazzed me more about Trek than anything has in years. OTOH, my interest and passion in Trek has waned significantly in those years, so my expectations may be lower and fear of disappointment far lower than other people's. Recently I was at a convention where Chas Evans (Paramount distribution, I think) talked about the new film and what they are doing to market it. Seems that JJ has a vision and is determined to stick to it (which might be at odds with the ability to market the film). I'm all for somebody having a vision and sticking to it since, in my opinion, films made by committee generally lack direction. I like a director with a vision or determined to stick to his plan.

I like the casting, what I know of the actors. OTOH, I think the aesthetics might not necessarily be what fits in with my vision of what Trek/TOS should/does look like, but I'm willing to give it a fair hearing.

Those are my opinions so far.

As a long time TOS fan, I am really looking forward to seeing this. I enjoyed Lost and so was pleased to see JJ Abrams was in charge. The trailer video made it look very interesting - I realise that that's its job and lots of movies didn't live up to expectations, however I'll be seeing at in the cinema as soon as possible after the release.

I'm taking a wait-and-see attitude towards it. Personally, I don't expect it to be that great of a movie--possibly "Ok," but not "Great".

That said, I do plan on watching it in the theater (assuming it appears here in Greenfield), if for no other reason than to support the franchise, and hope that a new series gets started based on how well it does at the box office.

I don't really have much of an opinion as regards Trek XI. What I've seen so far leaves me pretty cold. I'm also not a huge fans of Abrams work (particularly but not limited to movies). So I really don't have much of a reason to get my hopes up all that much.

At the same time, I don't want to pass judgement before I've actually seen it. It might be a great movie, I really don't know.

I might go to see it when it's in theaters. I might also wait and rent it later on. I'm just not really sure at this point.

I'm looking forward to it. It won't affect my enjoyment of what has gone before at all one way or the other - since that stuff is still there.

I'm just hoping for an interesting story.

I feel pretty in the middle about it. I try to limit how many new movies I watch per year to about 6 because there are just so many old movies I want to see, but this could definitely be one of the new ones I see. I'm not excited about it or anything. It's one of those movies where I'll see what the general consensus is in movie reviews and decide whether I want to watch it based on that.

Just because you're a fan of a franchise doesn't mean you have to watch everything it offers. For example, I'm a big fan of The X-Files and last year I watched the first few seasons of the show again for the first time since they were new. It was the perfect build-up to the new movie's release, but when the thing came out and generally got bad reviews, I opted not to see it. I may never see it. I think of Star Trek the same way. If the buzz is good, cool, and I'll go see it. If not, I won't and it's no big deal.

I'm looking forward to it but I know there are still five possible ways I might end up answering the question, "Did you like it?":

Yes
Yes, but...
Eh
No, but...
No

I'm hoping for the first two options. Most likely it's going to be the second. Superficially, I'll probably think it's a great way to kick off the summer season of 2009.

it seems to me that most trek fans dont want to even talk about the movie because they dont want to have to deal with the (quote) "chest thumpers" on either side.

Not quite. All I said was that I didn't want to talk about the movie in the ST XI forum when it's released in May. Slight difference. :p

I've been around the bush enough times to know what I'll be "missing out" on. It's going to be hectic in that forum for a few months. That's just the way it's going to be. And probably the way it should be since there will be a combination of a lot of enthusiasm and intesnity. It'll be like the NEM forum which had so much going on that all four admins at the time had to co-moderate with the two regular mods in the forum, so it was like NEM had six moderators.

When things start to drop off, there's some type of majority opinion (51% or more) that I can either agree or disagree with, and discussion has been folded into the movie forum, then maybe cooler heads will be allowed to prevail.
