I guess I'm a chest thumper.
I said shortly after this movie was announced that I would not go to see it. But, my reasons had nothing to do with whether or not I thought the movie would be any good. I decided before this movie ever came about that I would no longer patronize Hollywood's non-stop pattern of re-cast, re-boot, re-imagined films. I have yet to see one that, quite frankly, hasn't sucked. And, I will no longer give them my hard earned dollars for a "maybe this one will be different" shot in the dark.
For the record, I haven't seen any of the latest horror flic remakes either. Nor will I.
Those are MY reasons for not seeing this movie, and mine alone.
Having said all of that, the more I read from Abrams, Orci or Kurtzman the more I tend to believe that none of them have a clue about the story they are trying to tell.
The interview a couple of weeks ago from Orci and Kurtzman on Trek vs. Star Wars left me shaking my head in disbelief. Orci commenting about the similarity between the characters in the two stories leads me to believe that he has either never watched TOS or SW, because other than the story taking place in space and there being heroes and villians, the characters and story are NOTHING alike.
For the record, I am not a hater of anybody involved in this film. I have enjoyed most of the TV work that Abrams has done (although I'm more than ready for Lost to be over) and find Fringe from the trio to be very entertaining. And, if they were creating an ORIGINAL Star Trek work (meaning all new characters and stories), I may not be as concerned. I simply don't believe that they have a firm grasp on what it is that they are trying to re-create.
Does that mean that they can't create an entertaining story? No. But, if somebody has to turn Trek into something that it's not to make it entertaining, then it's not Trek that they've made entertaining, no matter what the title says.
