According to Variety, Star Trek took home an award at the 4th Annual Digital Movie Advertising Creative Showcase

Focus Features' "Coraline" shared the honor for multichannel cross media campaign with animation house Laika Studios and agency Wieden+Kennedy. Paramount's "Star Trek" won for theatrical release -- rich media display ad, along with Avatar Labs, which handled the creative.

DMACS honors work of digital film marketers and creative houses specializing in interactive movie advertising. The awards cover the period Oct. 1, 2008 through Sept. 15, 2009.

Should have done that for the last two movies, an agressive marketing campaign like this would have probably doubled their box office. Damn, some theories simply cannot be proven or disproven. Ever.

Right as you may be about unproven theories, I'd very much have to disagree with this... sometimes aggressive marketing campaigns can lead to further financial losses and contribute to even more of a film's "bombing." If a movie out and out sucks, sometimes no marketing campaign whatsoever can save it. Sometimes you need a large marketing campaign for a proportionately large movie, sometimes for a smaller movie you need to tone it back. Like most things in film, money is not always the answer, and bigger isn't always better. They have to be justified.

I'll give First Contact some credit, though: their ad campaign included Ted Dansen hosting a star-studded televised tribute to all of Trek! Now that's epic.
