Star Trek v and the rock blob!

So the story goes on STV the rock-man was partially filmed for the climax with the plan being that the footage would be completed on a soundstage at paramount. But once viewed Mr Shatner realised they would not be convincing and asked Bran Ferren to replace the rock-man with SFX calling it a rock-blob!
the creature would be a shape changing serpent like entity.
when the footage came in it was clear that the rock-blob effect would be no more convincing than the rock-man. In the end and at the last minute they ended up cutting the footage to a minimum and re-using the god-head FX which is what we see in the completed film...
Has anyone ever seen any of the rock-blob sfx concept art or storyboards??????

You can view test footage of the "rock man" on the Collector's Edition of the DVD release of TFF.

I wasn't referring to the Rock-man test footage, I was referring to the never seen rock blob which was Shatener's sfx replacement which never made it to the screen and has never been seen in any format as far as i'm aware!!!

I don't think I've ever heard of this, but you've piqued my curiosity. Please do tell if you have anymore details.

For those who haven't seen it...

I don't know, I think it looks OK! Certainly in keeping with the movie.

That suit could have been made to work. All they needed to do was forget the failed smoke apparatus in the costume and used some other method to make it appear to have steam coming off it due to heat. They could also have done a couple of split screens to make more than one of them.

Never seen the "rock blob".

I'm kinda glad they left the rock creatures out and went with the god/devil thing chasing Kirk up the mountain.

TOS already had a rock thing with Yarnek, and Galaxy Quest did it better than could have been done in 1989 anyway.

I like ST5 just the way it is. ;)

The DC Comics adaptation of the film, obviously based upon earlier versions of the screenplay, actually depicts the rock-monster battle, as Kirk attempts to return to the shuttlecraft, etc.

According to Elizabeth Shatner's Captains Log book and also WS'
movie memories, the rock blob (his words not mine) would have been a pre cgi animation by Bran Ferren associates to replace the rock man footage all together, they even reshot some of the troma footage on a sound-stage specifically to cut out the rock man with a view to replacing him with the new SFX. this info doesn't seem to be generally know as the Elizabeth Shatner book seems to imply that the rock blob is the same as the re-use of the god-head as seen in the movie, but in WS' movie memories book which was written much later, Mr Shatner admits that the rock blob SFX were also sub par and were cut completely. At the last moment he re-cut the film dropping all the Kirk being chased by the rock-blob footage replacing it with inter cutting between flashing lights and a reuse of the god-head, thus implying that it was the god-head that was and had been chasing them back to the shuttle and Kirks subsequent climb up the mountain. Nilo Rodis apparently did some sketches for the Rock Blob but I've never seen them.

Looks like something from a 70's Japanese monster film to me. I'd think we'd take the piss out of TFF even more today if it had stayed in.

It needed Abraham Lincoln too.

Maybe a Klingon who can throw his voice, going "Spock? Spock! Help me, Spock!"

But that's just me... :p

Thank you very much for the info. It's been almost 20 years since I read WS Movie Memories and I had completely forgotten about that.
