Star Trek: The Official Guide to Our Universe

The Sheliak, in the episode, demonstrated an interest in colonizing. Beta Lyrae could be just another colony.

Except there's no way a system like that could possibly be amenable to life. It's a semidetached binary pair of blue giants, swirling around each other at high speed and constantly spewing hydrogen and intense radiation out into space. Beautiful but deadly. It might have lifeless, icy planetoids orbiting at a great distance, as in "The Slaver Weapon," but nothing could live there and there'd be no sense colonizing it with anything more than a research outpost.

As I said, they're probably from some nearby system and are named for the most prominent star in their region. If they've been colonizing worlds in the region for a long time, the Federation might not even know what their native world is, so they'd name them after the region.

My wish is that it gets folks to learn a bit of science from their favourite episodes and also get them to take their own Trek across the real night sky from their doorsteps and backyards.

Was able to pick this up at Indigo on Wednesday, too. It's a lot thicker than I was expecting. Can't wait to dive in! :techman:
