Star trek the motion picture's Where waldo

Johnny7oak

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Ok so if you already know about it, sorry... anyways I was watching the movie and kept seeing odd things in the gathering there during the briefing. I kind of vaguely recall something from somewhere about a "where's waldo" scene... my apologies if its old news.

Anyone know if indeed it was planned?

I'm not sure what you're asking...Do you mean that somewhere in the briefing room scene there was supposed to be some dude in a red and white striped shirt and hat hidden there?

BTW, if you're being literal...TMP was in 1979, and the first Where's Waldo book was published in 1987, so WW didn't exist when the film was made.

IIRC, the briefing room scene was made up of various people from the film's production staff, along with a few guests such as Bjo Trimble and David Gerrold.

Was it planned that the rec deck contained many alien crewmembers and unusual costume designs? Sure it was. The purple lizard guy is a Saurian (although Mego sold him as a Rigellian), and the blue guy is a Betelgeusian. Both aliens (and others) were released as 3.75" action figures.

Front row, from left: Marlene Willauer (in the supposed "Jedi" costume you identified; actually intended as a civilian hydroponic gardener), Scott Dweck (Grace Lee Whitney's son, as a Vulcan), Paula Crist (as alien "Worene", her own creation), Bjo Trimble, Grace Lee Whitney (as Janice Rand), Susan Sackett and Louise Stange.

Next row, from left: Trek novelist Kathleen Sky, Leigh Strother-Vien and the very tall Dennis Fischer ("Cinefantastique" and "Enterprise Incidents" article writer). David Gerrold is behind Grace Lee Whitney.

Similarly, the San Francisco scenes feature many aliens and unusual costumes.

Just about everything that appears on the screen in a professional movie or TV show is deliberately planned that way.

Except for goofs like people wearing watches in roman times or plates of food changing their contents between angles. :D

If these other films would be approached like Star Trek fans approach Star Trek, there would be several internet forums and a few spin-off novels about time travellers in Ben-Hur.
