Star Trek : The Art Of The Film

I went to EVERY frakking Borders and Barnes & Noble in the South Bay today, and NOBODY has it, even though their own websites and computers list it as being in-store...

Yeah I checked a couple places here in Sac and they didn't have it either. They said it was shipped 11/10, but hadn't arrived in their stores yet. :(

I looked on Chapters online and while it's instock and ready to order no stores have it in yet which I suspected. My chapters have been really bad lately in terms of getting in new shipments. I will probably have to wait a few days before it comes in. Maybe I'll be lucky and the comic shop will have it in when I go there tomorrow.

Chapters Gloucester in Ottawa's east end has it on the shelves.

I expect that situation to last maybe two days now that the fact's been announced. :)

Well, I "reserved" my copy at Barnes & Noble... so we'll see if they actually have it now, or if their computers are just frakkin' with me. I'll find out in about an hour, when I go over there.

Whatever happened to "fair use"?

Are you in the UK? I know it has a generous 'fair use' law, afaik it doesn't apply in Aus (my home) nor in the US: any use of the material, including fanfic is theoretically illegal.

Of course "fair use" exists in Australia! If you want to include an image of the cover, or some of the internal art, to accompany a book review, you simply email the publisher, explain what you wish to do and they'll respond, often very quickly. They will include the copyright details and a line of text that must accompany the images.

That is "fair use".

One thing the publishers would wish to avoid: imagine a fan posting crappy versions of the art, and potential buyers deciding not to buy the book, or canceling orders, because they have pre-judged the book only from those poorly-reproduced pics.

Although to date tptb have had the sense not to try tracking down and suing individual fic writers.
But there have certainly been fan editors who've been sent "Cease and desist" letters over the decades. This is usually only when the fanfic editor crosses the line of "fair use", ie. is making a profit from said fan-made, unlicensed materials (and boasting about it), or having a fanfic published in paperback book form so that it resembles a ST novel from Pocket Books.

Check any Paramount Media Release for the ST films and TV series. They always estimate the number of fan-made publications. (It's not a list of how many fans received "Cease and desist" letters; it's said with a measure of pride re Star Trek's ability to endure due to fan support. And "fair use".)

There was no book review at the start of this thread, just random images snapped from inside the book, and the original poster admitted they were of poor quality. Hence, the copyright owners jumped! As is their right and duty.

Dymocks Aus told me they don't know if they will get it.. but I'm looking fwd to finding it somewhere if not Amazon. I love the cover.

Of course they'll get it! Why not place a special order with them? Then they have to order one - and they'll no doubt order others for the shelves at the same time.

Dymocks can vary from store to store because they have manager/owners holding franchises in some stores. Most Dymocks stores got in lots of copies of the novelization, and it moved quickly, plus they got in air-freighted copies of most of the next six months worth of novels, in plentiful supply.

Yes, they can order anything from the Titan Books distributor.

Well, I FINALLY got mine. I reserved it on B&N's website, only to arrive at the store, and they tell me that they don't have the reservation, even though I got a voicemail telling me that the book was reserved for me. So, I go upstairs, and not only is the book there, in the store, but it is on the wrong shelf. So... I go back down to the cashier, with my non-reserved reservation, and pay for it.

B&N is one company I won't be buying books from in the future, if I can help it.

In any case, the book is indeed very beautiful. I am going to post a review later, after I've had the chance to really soak it up.

EDIT: Okay... this is proof of how inept Barnes & Noble apparently is...

As I said, I went to their store, to pick up my reservation, which I had SEEN in their store, only to be told they could not find it, even though their computers said it IS in stock. So... I have had the book for a day now, and it is on my shelf in fron tof me, as I type this. What do I see in my email inbox today?

What a bunch of frakking morons.

Damn, I haven't had that problem myself yet but hopefully I won't in the future since I'm hardly going to Borders anymore, since its in another city and just a waste of my time to go up there when they hardly have any Star Trek books really on the shelf to buy or look at.

Well, it's not that big of a deal, since I was able to find and buy my copy well enough... it's just irritating that their system is so problematic. I really hate using Amazon.com, considering that both B&N and Borders have stores within a couple blocks of my house. I'd rather just walk down the street and pick it up, same-day, ya know? :)

My local B&N told me when I inquired about it that "the company didn't ship us any." Has B&N taken stocking decisions away from local stores?

Oh, tie-in books like this in my local store have been reduced to ONE shelf segment and moved off to the side of the store out of the traffic zone. Franchise books in general have been cut to a bare minimum, but ironically enough comics TPBs have expanded to nearly afull shelf line.

Aye, when I went to reserve it, before I tried doing it online, the lady who "helped" me, said that the books were on order, yet when I finally went back to the store the NEXT day, there were three of them, on-shelf, and the employees and the computers ALL said that there were no copies of the book in the store, until I physically showed it to them...

I'm just saying that Barnes & Noble needs to get its frakking act together, especially since the busy holiday shopping season is upon us.

OMFG! I ordered the book for myself from Amazon....(it's supposed to be an xmas gift from the husband)....i ordered it on Saturday and it just arrived. IT IS GORGEOUS!!!!! OMG!!!!! I mean, if you have any doubts about buying it, DON'T! It is worth every penny (Amazon had it for $19.99)

ARG! now i have to put it in my husband's closet so he can wrap it up and give it to me for xmas!!!

I havnt got a copy yet, im hoping to get one on xmas day. Ive flicked through it, yeah and its amazing.

Come one, 19 days to go.

I saw the book in the store. It's a freaking crime the posters that were designed and never produced.

Damn, dude. I was gonna post the exact same thing.

I was at Bluewater Shopping Mall here in the UK, and flicked through it waiting for the missus to shop.

Those posters are amazing. The use of the exact Enterprise from the first pilots were an amazing choice by the artisits. Its was reproduced exactly as the model in the show looks.

I love the Enterprise recruitment ones though, theyre so coold andd, just, well cool.:techman:

I pre-ordered the "Star Trek Art of the Film" book from Amazon.com. I received it about two weeks ago. It is a beautiful book. I loved the photos, drawings, and quotes from the cast. It is a perfect companion to the ST XI film.

I flipped through it at the book store and am going to get it for myself around Christmas time...there were seven copies in and none bought yet (I asked)...spectacularly awesome book. I agree the rejected or proposed poster designs were spectacular. I'm pleased with what we got, even the all white and Enterprise warp shadow poster has grown on me big time since I first saw it. I can't wait to buy this and actually read it and enjoy it.
