Star Trek : The Art Of The Film

Mods were totally cool with Youtube videos of deleted scenes posted well before the release of the bluray, but they won't allow a few scans from a book posted? I don't understand this set of rules.

...and I'm not arguing against the removal of the photos if TPTB of the forum thought it was necessary.

I just did not want to leave any shadows as to if I had actually paid for the thing or if it was something I found online and illegally downloaded or something like that.
I knew that the book had been legally purchased by you, so that was never really at issue, but the removal of images from the book which were posted here came as a result of T'Bonz having received a communication directly from the book's publisher. I have also removed the images from the "Starship Size" thread for the same reason.

This is why I hate the corporate implimentation of copyright law, which results on them clamping down on fan activity that could serve as advertisement for and increase interest in their product. I previously hadn't cared about the "Art Of" book, but had considered buying it after seeing the images and discussing them in this thread. I'm now swinging back to not making the purchase thanks to their action.

So if anybody form Pocket Books is reading this, congratulations guys, you just shot yourselves in the foot. Keep up the good work. :bolian:

We were lucky that didn't get us into trouble. I wasn't aware they were not legit or I'd have pulled them. My mistake.

In this case, I received an email.

I don't think authors mind a photo or two, or a review if one has the book. But there were quite a few photos posted, and this was before it was out here in the U.S. We need to be mindful of copyright and I've advised the mods to be on the lookout in future. In cases like this, I will err on the side of caution. Last thing I want to do is rile up TPTB. Not good for us. Plus - I prefer to do the right thing when I can.

Copyright law is tricky stuff. For instance, did you know that "fan fiction" and other work derived from copyrighted works is a copyright violation?

I assume the  is facetious - does anyone not understand that all this stuff is sub rosa activity?

Yes, children, even the fan films. Even the "non profit" fan films.

Is This The Best Trek Book Ever !!!

I have just received STAR TREK THE ART OF THE FILM , and all i can say is WOW .

This must be the most publicised best trek book ever, the pictures are mouthwatering jaw dropping good it is a must for fans that love the new film .

Little tip as well the front and back sleeve cover slip it off and it shows a great pictures of spock and spock prime .

Who else thinks this book is amazingly good . !!!!:bolian::bolian::drool::eek:

Re: Is This The Best Trek Book Ever !!!

You got it already? Where do you live, because its not supposed to be release in the US until the 17th, at least I think it is then?

Been waiting for this for a long while now.

Nice to see an honest review, cheers, Sal.

I love these books, somehow there better than the dvd extras. I remember back in 1994, reading 'The making of Jurassic Park' and such, it was great, before DVD and the internet. I loved looking at the pictures, seeing the design evolution, changes to sets/props etc. I have 'The art of Superman Returns' also, and its so cool to see the Singer universe adapting from the Donner universe. Its a really interesting read, and this looks awsome.

Just read a few more reviews, might pick myself up a copy somewhen.

The one thing I wish devoutly that they'd not left out of that Superman book you refer to was the maps of Metropolis herself that were produced for prop usage in the film. It would have made my day to see their version of a Metropolis street map, and to be able to have it at hand for entertainment and possibly reference as well.

(Of course, if they're interested in a little extra spin-off merchandising revenue however late in the day and still have the map artwork on file, I'd gladly pay any honest merchant able and willing to provide...)

And now back to your regularly scheduled Trek movie book discussion...

Whatever happened to "fair use"?

Are you in the UK? I know it has a generous 'fair use' law, afaik it doesn't apply in Aus (my home) nor in the US: any use of the material, including fanfic is theoretically illegal.

Although to date tptb have had the sense not to try tracking down and suing individual fic writers.

Did anyone notice the cover-names they used for the three main vessels on those concept sketches and renderings (they are also visible on the BD):

  • 'Cantina' for the Enterprise
  • 'Sweetjudy' for the Kelvin
  • 'Hanson's Ranch' for the Narada
:D

Yeah, i though the same at one point. To design a city from scratch, based on a basic template that Metropololis is based (New York) I wouldve loved to see more of the city streets etc. Even scale miniatures of certain strets and what detail they had put there that only the creator would know. such as thatre posters, adverts etc etc.

The detail to some of the stuff is amazing to say the least, but a whole city street map, with a corrisponding subway map and tourist supllement wouldve been awsome to say the least.

I went to EVERY frakking Borders and Barnes & Noble in the South Bay today, and NOBODY has it, even though their own websites and computers list it as being in-store...
