Star Trek: Short Treks

In all the hoopla with new Trailer and other news some may have missed this little announcement
I wonder if this is the same mini-series (really really mini, max 60 min total) that was announced earlier, or something brand new.

Rainn Wilson will return to reprise his role as Harry Mudd in a short he will direct. Aldis Hodge (Hidden Figures, Showtime's upcoming City on a Hill) will star in another installment as Craft, a man who finds himself the only human on board a deserted ship. Additional episodes will explore Saru's (Doug Jones) backstory as the first Kelpien to join Starfleet and Tilly's (Mary Wiseman) journey aboard the USS Discovery and her friendship with an unlikely partner.

I think the idea is this will air during hiatus? Probably between Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 of Season 2. Thoughts?

Trek Core says starting December and has a source.

But the Press Release says month starting in the fall.

Maybe they haven't figured out when to release it yet. Personally, I think "teasing" people with 15 min of new Trek per month is a smarter play rather than making people binge (on all 60 min of it) right before the release of Season 2. Let them release it on CBSAA for free (no subscription needed) and they will get A LOT of hits. Some of those will definitely sign up for Season 2.

They should have done one that is Enterprise-focused to set up this season.

I have a feeling they wanted to intentionally hold off on that for the Season Premiere. I don't think they want to give away their Main Guest Attraction right off the bat.

When in doubt go with the actual press release then the person reporting what was said cause they might be assuming certain things based on what was said live or mixing two things by accident.

This is a good idea overall. I hope they are planning to do more then these four like in in the middle of the potential break during the season or after the season finishes.

This reminds me of the Marvel shorts that were included on some of the MCU movie blu-ray releases.

Ha ha, gotta love the CBS All Access greed. Yeah, spend $6 (or $10 for ad-free) a month to watch a 10-15 minute show each month.

Or wait until right before the January premiere of S2 to restart All Access, and watch them then.

Guess which one. ;)

I'm so lucky we have Netflix distributing it in the UK.

I am kind of looking forward to this, mostly for the Tilly one. :D

I would have preferred if they made one more regular episode instead. But this way they probably get people to subscribe to CBSAA earlier.
Or renew their subscriptions sooner, for those who opted to cancel after Season 1.

Trailer gives it away.

This is probably a budget thing. They can avoid excessive SFX and makeup with some of these one shots.

Now they're directly taking on Star Trek fan films with 15 minute mini-episodes!

Jk. Maybe they'll be fun but tbh I'm expecting they'll be skippable and pointless. We'll see.

The question is will it all be canon. They must let us know so people don't suffer like those who still are not certain if the first officer from the "Nemisis" deleted scenes is canon.

I would've rather they used Mary Wiseman in a Captain Killy short.

How do we know it isn't about Captain Killy? Captain KIlly wasn't always captain Killy? Maybe we see how she works with a partner to kill the previous captain and take command.
