You would think that the Kelpiens would spend their lives trying to seem less edible?

Riddled with parasites, space syphilis and 12 years marinating in poop.

Religious indoctrination can do much to forestall such things. And we didn't see the whole of Kaminar. Just that one village.

Hmmm. Had to do a big update to my app. The home screen says it’s streaming now but it’s nowhere to be found. 7:48.

Yeah, the phone claims it's streaming but it's not on the phone or the laptop. Feh.

Eek it felt too short. I loved the world-building; felt like seeing Vulcan in Amok Time for the first time.

    Fantastic!

Some of the cinematography was well beyond what one would expect from a project like this. And I loved the use of the UT at the end.

Also, bring back the real Georgiou!

Very short. I liked the visuals of Saru’s homeworld. His rescuer was a pleasant surprise. Didn’t see that coming,

Well, that was...mixed. I dunno how I felt.

The good: The sense of worldbuilding that went into Saru's homeworld was great. Significant care went into little things like the props which made it feel more like an actual pre-warp culture when compared to the often "generic feeling" props of earlier Treks. Having Georgiou show up was a nice surprise as well.

The bad: The expository dialogue that Saru had with his father was at times cringe inducing. Worse, the show didn't really establish any reason Saru was different from other Kelpiens - he just was - which made it kinda a crap "origin story." Also, I realize Kelpien mental abilities may be different than our own, but the idea that someone from a pre-warp civilization could somehow figure out a way to build a subspace beacon was kinda laughable.

I'm not sure: Maybe it wasn't a good idea to have Doug Jones in this role. He could have served as the narrator, but I feel like a younger actor - say teens or early 20s - would have been more appropriate. At times it feels a bit odd that he looks/sounds exactly the same as his older self but he is being so (publicly) deferential to his father's wishes. Maybe it's a species-wide difference though - Kelpiens might physically develop before they are fully "adult." But it seemed odd as a viewer.

The way the first few minutes of the short were shot reminded me a lot of Terrence Malick's work.

Still not up on CBS, but available on Amazon.

I really loved this. It wasn't as good as Calypso, but it was a lovely little story!

    • The surprise cameo was delightful.
    • I suspect people will be frustrated that we don't know what made Saru different, but there's no origin story more classic that "young person who feels different from the rest of their society," so I didn't feel that I needed a deeper reason.
    • Saru's father had some exposition that stayed just this side of too much, thankfully.
    • It gave me Terrence Malik vibes at the beginning, and I see I'm not alone in that.
    • The storytelling about the device and the process of making contact with the Federation was highly economical, with a bare minimum of exposition and explanation. I really appreciated that.
    • The sets, props, and locations were gorgeous, and you can tell they benefited from shooting in a location that was budgeted as part of Season 2.
    • There was a relatively large amount of story here, but it was well paced and didn't feel cut for time like the first short Trek.

i’m not sure if i loved the ending for tying threads together or hated the ending for making the world seem a little small.

but i appreciated that this was yet another hopeful entry after the dark and depressed season one. these are making me optimistic about season two.
