Okay, folks — here we go! In less than a week, Second Nature, the first book of the new Star Trek: Seekers series, will officially be released, though as of this writing I know that some copies have been spotted in brick-and-mortar stores in the United States. Consequently, I am taking the initiative and creating the review/poll thread for the book.

This would be a good time to remind everyone that the series debuts with a two-part story; its conclusion will be in next month's release, Star Trek: Seekers #2, Point of Divergence, by Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore.

I look forward to hearing what you all think of the first book and the new series. For those of you who will be able to attend the Shore Leave convention in a few weeks, know that both Books 1 and 2 of Seekers will be available at the show. This is a special, convention-weekend-only promotion, arranged by special permission of the publisher.

To all who join us on this new foray into the unknown expanse of the Taurus Reach, thank you, and welcome!

    Best,
    David Mack

Can't wait!! I pre-ordered the books, but I have to finish the Vanguard series first.

^ Sorry folks, I dropped the ball on opening the review thread at the usual time due to crunch mode at work; somehow the month went by at warp speed and I didn't check for the release date until this morning. This must be the first I missed in two years or so. Crap.

(A problem here is that the review thread table site is not going to pick up this thread because of the non-standard poll format, and to my knowledge even mods don't have UI to edit poll options after the fact. Direct database manipulation could fix it, but I don't know if the admins would go that far. I guess we can use this to put the notion that the page should never act as a constraint on the forum into practice, though it would have been fun to see where Seekers #1 charts among the Vanguard.)

^ Ah, sorry. I didn't realize that the Poll formatting was so rigid. I thought that it would be fine as long as it was a poll with five options in descending order. It didn't occur to me that changing the names of the poll buttons' choices would make it not show up in the Tabulated Scores compilation. I can always delete this thread and start over, if need be.

^ Aye, it's originally rigid because I designed it to run automated with no maintenance required and was worried about false matches, but in discussion about the whole thing it also turned out that while everyone realizes this method isn't exactly scientific either way, folks do want the question+options to be the same so the results are baseline comparable (word choice biases things, etc). If you'd have another go that would be really great :). As long as the options are the standard set and Review Thread is in the title it'll work out.

Aaaand rushing off into another day ...

Looking forward to seeing how this series evolves and ends. I need to order book 1 soon.

I've been informed my copy has shipped, and should be here tomorrow. I can't wait. :) Having read the excerpt (prologue, I assume?) it looks to be of the usual Mack quality (already I care about the plight of the Tomol, which presumably is key).

^ FWIW, if we're going to "fix" the poll we're going to do it in a way where the posts in this thread are preserved (I've just fired a message to trampledamage suggesting a maneuver), so don't let that ruckus detract you from discussing things in the meantime.

I'm going to close this thread. Sho will create a new one with a new poll, I'll merge the posts later when I'm home. So you don't need to repost your thoughts, but please re-vote because I can't merge polls.
