The pediatric waiting room was practically empty except for two men, Captain James T Kirk and General Christopher Pike, who were engaged in conversation. Suddenly there was a bright flash in the room.
Kirk and Pike looked over to where the flash came from and saw two men. One of the men they both knew very well. He was once Jim Kirk’s best friend, and the man who had brought David Marcus back to life; Gary Mitchell. The other man was actually just barely an adult, and was someone whom Pike had already met before; his name was Trelane.
“Hi guys!” Trelane said with a slight wave of his hand.
Kirk and Pike were NOT amused.
ROBERT SCORPIO PRESENTS
GODS
“What are you doing here?” Kirk asked as he and Pike both stood up to confront the two omnipotent beings.
“Is that any way to talk to a friend?” Mitchell asked with a smile.
“I don’t know what you are now, Gary,” Kirk said coldly, “but you’re no friend of mine.”
“Hey,” Mitchell said in his only cold way, “I brought David back to life, so why don’t you cut some fucking slack?”
“Yeah, you did Gary, I’ll give you that. But now there are nuts out there who are willing to kill, anyone, to get him so they can control not only him, but his powers.” Kirk said. “Is that the kind of life he will have to live? A pariah of danger for those around him, and cost the lives of people like Caroline?” Kirk asked, knowing that Gary knew Caroline (Pike’s dead sister, who was killed in a pervious episode while trying to keep David Marcus safe; she failed.)
Mitchell’s face betrayed a small glimmer of guilt.
“I didn’t know he would come back with powers like my own.” Mitchell said. “But he did, and now it’s too late to do anything about that.”
“Then why are you here?” Pike asked Mitchell.
“Its good to see you too,” Mitchell said, sarcastically, to Pike.
“We are here,” Trelane said, before Mitchell and Pike could continue with the barbs, “to take the child.”
With that, Kirk punched Mitchell, smashing his former friend into the table next to where they stood. Mitchelle’s eyes glowed momentarily, and then went back to normal. Still on the ground, rubbing his chin, Mitchell looked up to Kirk.
“Does that make you feel better; punching God?” Mitchell asked softly.
“You are not taking my son,” Kirk said with anger. “He brought me all the way here from the Delta-quadrant with just a simple thought because he was scared. I will not abandon him again. Gods or no Gods, I won’t let you take him!”
“Jim,” Pike said with a slight smile. “They could have taken him without letting us know, and they didn’t. I don’t think they can take David without your permission.”
“How perceptive,” Trelane said as Mitchell stood back up. “But I assure you, the humans who are after your child are nothing compared to the galactic forces that will be out to get him as well. The only way to keep him truly safe is by letting him go with us.”
“How do we know,” Pike said, “that you’re here to take David so he can’t be used against you, by either us, or these galactic forces you speak of?”
“I guess you’ll just have to trust us.” Mitchell said to Kirk.
“Is there some kind of law,” Pike said, “a universal law that says you just can’t take him without permission? Is this freewill at work?”
“You might say that,” Trelane said. “But believe me,” Trelane said, “there are forces in the universe, like the Borg, whom I showed you the last time we met General Pike, that would take that child and use his powers to destroy this universe, if they could; and they would be able to. That is how powerful the child could become, over time.”
“Why now?” Kirk asked. “Its not like he got these powers just yesterday.”
“Because,” Mitchell said, still rubbing his jaw, “when he brought you back from the Delta-quadrant it was like sending a flare up in the dark sky. It made him noticeable to the rest of the universe.”
“Where would you take him?” Pike asked.
“A place that exists outside time and space,” Trelane said. “He will be safe there until he can learn to control his powers and defend himself.” Trelane told them. “Here, on Earth, untrained, he could accidentally destroy your world with a simple thought. Even you have to be aware of this.”
Kirk and Pike knew that what Trelane said was somewhat true.
“I would want to see him,” Kirk said. “And if he wanted to see me, you would have to let him see me.”
“We would try our best. But for that to happen, you, Kirk, would have to come outside time and space yourself; such a journey could kill you.” Trelane said.
“I’ll take my chances,” Kirk said softly.
“Since we’re all being nice here,” Pike said, “why not bring the Enterprise back?”
“We can’t,” Trelane said.
“Wait,” Kirk said, “you can waltz in here, take my son, and yet you can’t send our friends home?”
“Its that universal law, isn’t it?” Pike asked.
“Yes,” Trelane said. “Mister Pike here has set a chain of events in motion that must now be played out.”
“Then send me back,” Kirk said. “Send me back to the Enterprise.”
“We can’t do that either,” Trelane said. “By bringing you back here as he did, your son violated that universal law you keep mentioning. It was an unplanned event that has now weaved its way through the fabric of the universes, and can not be undone.”
Treland snapped his fingers, and David Marcus suddenly appeared in Kirk’s arms.
“I’m sorry it has to be this way Jim,” Mitchell said as Kirk handed David over to Trelane. “I know you hate me, and I understand, but I promise you that I will not let any harm come to David; I give you my word.”
“You have my word too, and,” Trelane said, “you will now see why that promise is important to have than Mister Mitchell’s.”
Pike arched an eyebrow, a habit he had picked up from being around Sarek so much, at Trelane’s final words.
Suddenly there was a bright flash; and when the blinding light faded, there was a surprising twist. Trelane and David Marcus were gone; but Mitchell remained.
“What the hell…” Mitchell said in shock, and then instantly there was another flash and Mitchell was gone.
“What the hell was that all about? What happened to Gary?” Pike wondered.
“I hope he went straight to hell.” Kirk replied.
“Lets go get a beer,” Pike said. “I need one; badly.”
Kirk thought of David, and could only hope that Trelane would keep his word. If there were indeed galactic forces out to get David, going with Trelane, until such time David was older, was the best of bad choices he had to chose from.
Kirk and Pike headed out of the medical complex, and towards the city of San Francisco to share a beer.
