So I just finished reading Star Trek - Romulans: Pawns Of War by John Byrne. This is the trade edition of the IDW comics issues.
It was a fun read I finished in two sittings--hey, I had to break for dinner. (-: A decent read. And, yes, it reads much like a Classic Trek episode in overall style. If I have a quibble it's the inclusion of more than one familiar Klingon. I think Koloth fitted in there well enough, but somehow Kor didn't fit in as well I thought. I felt this made things just a little too cute and cozy and familiar, but it's a minor criticism. I did think the characters sounded like themselves and there were even more than a hint of likenesses to the actors of familiar characters.
It was fun seeing familiar events from the Romulan perspective. Actually, fleshed out a bit more, this could also have made a decent enough novel. I also enjoyed seeing Number One from the Pike era as a Commodore in command of her own ship, the U.S.S. Yorktown.
A fine enough tale even without any of the familiar major TOS characters.
