The Trouble With Tribbles

The U.S.S. Enterprise receives a top-priority order from Starfleet to protect a shipment of quadrotriticale grain being held at Deep Space Station K-7. The shipment of valuable engineered wheat is meant for famine-struck Sherman's Planet, and with Klingons taking shore leave on the space station, Starfleet Command is afraid the Klingons may try to steal the grain. But little does Kirk or the Federation Undersecretary for Agriculture know, a small furry Tribble, a creature with an enormous appetite and impressive reproductive skills, could pose an even greater threat to the mission than a few belligerent Klingons.

I have seen it and you are wrong.

This episode was originally shown last year. Here are the video clips from trekmovie.com

Ending shot should be a Klingon ship full of Tribbles and Klingon skeletons.

Like everyone else, I have always liked this episode. It is funny and serious with some very very nice character moments. Even the premise is tight and very well constructed. I give it an A.

As for the remastering, I give it an Above Average. I really like the original design of the station so it is nice to see it all cleaned up and loaded with detail. There are a few shots where the composition bugs me but the rest are very nice. But the one big thing that drives me crazy with this episode is the big white scratch spot that pops up in one of the bridge scenes. It really needed to be removed and why it wasn't is a complete mystery.

I watched it again this morning; I feel it's one of the better remastering efforts. The episode it pretty much bullet-proof. One thing that always bugged me: why does the Enterprise have to "orbit" the station? Orbiting a stationary object doesn't make sense.

Perhaps Kirk is watching out for devious Klingon attempts at attaching limpet mines and whatnot?

One of my all time favorites. I loved the remastering despite the syndication butchering. I cringe every time the dialog I know by heart is dropped. I would have voted Excellent for the remastering, but I hit vote too soon after grading the episode first.

I love that little whine that always plays when tribbles are around.

One other thing that bugs me, though: Why do the grain bins have OVERHEAD doors? What was Kirk expecting when he opened that door above his head? If the tribbles hadn't eaten everything, he would have been covered in grain!

And as we saw from Tribble-ations, that overhead bin was indeed supposed to be filled with grain. AFAIK, there was still some of it left when Sisko and Dax were in there scanning the tribbles.

Oh well. I would have preferred some DS9 references (especially since now we know why, after all the tribbles had fallen out of the bin, one or two would still come sailing out every minute or so: Sisko and Dax were throwing them out!), but I was very satisfied with this.

Re: Star Trek-RM: The Trouble With Tribbles… Grading/Discuss

Well, the grain wouldn't have necessarily been stored above the "spill line" so to speak. We don't really know how deep those storage compartments were exactly. We do know retro-actively from DS9 that they went up a fair ways with ladders and such. But unless the grain was poured into the compartments from the highest levels down and filled to capacity, there should be no danger. And that would have been a pretty silly locale for those doors in the first place. Kirk must have known better or was a complete idiot. Heh, one could argue that is why the doors were locked in the first place. But surely the station manager or the grain meister himself would have stepped in if they knew differently.

But as to why they were overhead, it is clear that this was simply the best way to pour a thousand tribbles onto the head of our dear Captain Kirk.

Re: Star Trek-RM: The Trouble With Tribbles… Grading/Discuss

I suppose there could have been a forcefield protecting the grain from spilling out the door if somebody opens it, but that begs the question of why it didn't keep the tribbles in there as well. Maybe it was keyed to only keep small, fine objects, like grain particles, from spilling out, and if anything heavier (like a person) reached through it, they could. So you could stick your hand in and take out a handful of grain without the whole thing spilling out, and a tribble could fall through it.

What can I say, this is not merely a "bad episode" it is an embarassment to the entitre Trek franchise.

^ Now there's an opinion not often seen in this forum.

Re: Star Trek-RM: The Trouble With Tribbles… Grading/Discuss

I would've liked to have seen it with all the DS9 stuff. Of course, I'm sure many disagree. It is cannon though right?

Re: Star Trek-RM: The Trouble With Tribbles… Grading/Discuss

A+ and excellent. The edits for syndication didn't butcher this episode like most others in the series, and the CBS Digital team did a really nice job with the Enterprise, space station K-7 and the Klingon battlecruiser.

It's a pity the same level of effort wasn't applied to last week's episode "The Ultimate Computer", which especially suffers in comparison to the terrific job done for "Tribbles". Le sigh.

Only if a majority of people are embarrassed by it which after 40 doesn't seem to be the case.
