Mammoth

Earth
Fifty-thousand years ago

The hunt was on, in more ways than one. A large mammoth lumbered towards the stream, in need of water. It’s massive body, and long tusks, a testimony to the beauty of such a beast. And as it used the snout that hung down from its head to grab the foliage near the stream, it was seemingly unaware that it was being watched. But unknown to the primitive human hunting party, the animal was well aware that it was being stalked.

Yet, that was the strange thing about life. The mammoth lived by instinct, totally oblivious to anything but what it needed at that moment, which was, in this case, foliage. It didn’t worry about the humans because the mammoth also smelt the scent of a Saber- tooth Tiger as well as the scent of the humans. The mammoth’s instinctive mind may not have been able to do complicated math, or build stone weapons, but it did know that the Tiger would attack the humans first because, well, there was no because. That’s just the way things were.

The foliage was plentiful, and that was all that mattered to the mammoth.

The six primitive humans that hid behind the large trunk of a dead tree kept their eyes on the mammoth. They were all males, and one of them, the biggest of the six, was the leader of the hunting party. At this point of human evolution, the use of language was in its infancy. Most hunts, like this one, were carried out with grunts, and or even hand signals. They weapons they had with them were, at this point of time, quite advanced for the time. But it would all come down the most simplest of weapons when it came time to strike the deathblow to the animal; a good sized rock. It would be used, but the leader of the hunting party, to smash the head of mammoth, several times, until the rock crushed the skull of the animal.

Their tribe wasn’t starving, to be sure. But the life of a nomadic tribe could not rely on a steady stream of food to eat. So, when the opportunity came to kill, and eat, the opportunity was taken.

Unknown to the six primitive humans, they were about to witness a most stunning sight. For at that moment, streaked towards the moon, was a streak of energy. It had been traveling for no more than an hour, and had originated from the planet Neptune. But it was more than just a streak of energy, it was alive. It was alive in the sense that it existed, but as to what it was, that would come later. First, it had to have a new purpose. Its current purpose, or existence, which was nothing less than holding reality together, was not sufficient; the others, like it, would remained interlocked, and keep reality safe from unraveling. What would a new purpose be? If it was no longer to hold reality together, then what other purpose could there be?

The mammoth had finished its watering, and came back out of the stream and made its way back towards the safety of the tundra. As it lumbered forth, it came across the bodies of five humans. Their bodies had been ripped apart savagely. Limbs were ripped from the torsos, heads were too. The large animal lumbered past the six dead humans. The mammoth did indeed live on instinct, and its instincts told it that the Saber-Tooth was content, its hunger was tamed for now, which meant life would go on.

One of the humans, however, was still alive. While his tribe mates had tried to attack the mammoth, and were intercepted, and killed, by the tiger, the sixth human stayed behind, hidden by the trunk of the dead try. He watched as the others, including his father, were shredded to pieces by the tiger. Fear had forced him to stay behind, and it was fear that had saved his life. The cowardly primitive man watched as the mammoth lumbered away.

Content that the mammoth, or even the Tiger, would not return, the small, five-foot primitive man, wearing animal skins, walked over to the dead bodies left behind by the Saber-tooth. He knelt down above his father’s dead body, which had been ripped in half by the Tiger. The stench of bile, and ...

STAR TREK; REMNANTS
Am I a God; or what?

(this story takes place in the same universe as STAR TREK: THE 21st CENTURY and COGLEY's LAW)

I came from Neptune; that much I know. Now, as to what I was on Neptune, I was never quite too sure. Was I energy? Was I a God? Just what was I, and what was I to become? I actually had the ability to see the future. And even though I could see what I was in the far future, it didn’t matter to me, because I had no idea what I was; but I was special. We’re all special, right? In our own existence, we all believe, be it omnipotent being or not, that we are at some point, the center of reality. Well, I was literally was at the center of reality.

So there I was, thrown to Earth as a beam of energy. I slammed down on a very primitive human, and the next thing you know, I had a penis, along with other strange limbs. I had never known the complexity of having such an existence. Soon, I had to eat and stay alive. I had to find food, and water. It was easy to get what I wanted because I also retained some of my powers.

When I came upon a Bison, thousands of years ago, I would just look at it, and the next thing you know, its nice and cooked, to various degrees of satisfaction. Well done, medium rare, rare, and heck, soon the humans around me thought that I was some God like being. So, why not take advantage of the situation.

Soon, I was Alpha-man. I could have whatever man or woman I wanted for sexual satisfaction, and I decided who lived or died. If I wasn’t pleased by one of my servants, I could just kill them, and who cared? I was God. It helped that I had these strange powers and was able to scare those around me into believing that I was vastly more powerful, thus worthy of their worship. I even helped those brutes discover spoken words, and had them believing in fire as a God as well; and only I could control the fire, which only enhanced my image as a God.

Faith? I was there at the start. I got them to believe that not only was I God, but that their world was at the center of my kingdom. And as long as they worshiped me, I would bring them good fortune. I wandered all over Earth, in various skin colors. I was black, brown, yellow; you name it, I was it!

And as I became more intone with my environment, I began to share some of my knowledge. It was used to build the Pyramids, and irrigation canals. I had decided that if I were going to live on Earth as one of them, I had to want to stay. I was Apollo, I was Buddha, I was Vishnu, and I was Jesus Christ; I was not only in their minds, I was even in their souls.

Then, one day, I realized that there were other visitors from another planet. They hid in the shadows, and behind force-fields, but I realized they were here observing humanity as well. They called themselves Vulcans, and I did not like their being on Earth; at all.
