Ok, so I took one of the idea's I had in the Future of Trek forum, and decided to write it.

This is going to be one of the most complex stories I've ever tried to write, so I'm gonna need alot of feedback if you guys and gals don't mind to much.

I have a few brain storm thoughts I'd like to share and get your opinion. plzkthxbai

Rebirth

Timeline
-2450
--Scientists realize that Subspace is beginning to collapse.
-- Outlying star systems are cut off with the degradation of the SubCom Network.
--Earths economy collapses, plunging them into a new dark age.
--Luna Prime is established beneath the surface of the moon. Known as “The last bastion of civilization.”
--Batazed becomes a barren waste due to overpopulation. Many refugee ships make the last leg of the trip with sublight engines.
--The Romulan empire retreats within it’s borders, but not before setting up a massive weapons grid along the edge their space.
--The Klingon Empire enters into another civil war, almost completely destroying themselves. Many of their ships are stranded between stars when Subspace finally collapses.
--The Borg fall into chaotic dysfunction, due to the fact that they can no longer keep in communication with the hive. Many of the Borg worlds re-immerge as individual cultures as the collective control diminishes.
--The Dominion looses control of the Gamma Quadrant. A new generation of Jem’Hadar questions the power of the Founders.

-12450
--Over time, subspace has begun to repair/heal itself. Derelict ships and relay stations respond to the restoration of the subspace layer as signals once again reach between stars.
--In Luna Prime, the leaders form a plan to send out ships, trying to make contact with other worlds once again. They restrict warp travel to lower speeds, so as to not repeat the mistakes of the past. They call themselves The Galactic Federation, and their primary goal is to restore order to the galaxy.
--The Romulans work out a new form of travel, re-engineering their ASC to make quick jumps through large gravitational wells.
--The Borg adapt, although they are less efficient now. Using Laser Point Communication Systems, they remain linked to a home world through a series of satellites, much like the Hirogen communication network. They are one of the first to detect the return of the subspace layer.

Ok, this is what would be said in the opening credits if this was a tv show. I kind of want this to set the tone for the series, and I am hoping this will become a series. Again, let me know what you think please?

Space; the Final Frontier.

That's what they used to say at least. 10,000 years ago, man searched the stars. They traveled among many races, and many worlds; striving to learn about the cosmos. That was before The Collapse. A subspace phenomena that started in the Hakaran system, then quickly spread through the galaxy.

The stars became quiet, and the great dragons of the stars went to sleep.

Now, they are awakening. The lower realms of space have healed themselves, and travel is again possible. And now the crew, My crew, of the GFS Rebirth, seek to bring light back to the darkened space between stars.

I like the intro and I think you could use it in your story as part of your prologue perhaps as it is rather unlikely this will become a TV show.

The concept is quite interesting. An sort of re-birth after an apocalyptic disaster. My only suggestion is to reconsider the time frame. Setting stories in an extremely distant future is always quite challenging as you would have to give some serious thought on how humans (and other races) would have developed. They would have little in common with your 21st century humans. Think about the difference between contemporary human society and one that existed 10,000 years ago.

It is going to be a novel, I just always thought that the old motto during the opening theme was missed, at least to me anyway. So I wanted something similar to it. I also adjusted the timeline to roughly 5000 years instead of 10,000 years, and one of the things I want to address is how humanity, especially earth, has changed.

Scene 1:

Federation Archive #S31-4864: 15AUG2453
Agent Skonn's research in the applications of Omega comtinue. He is confident that a significant breakthrough is near.

Federation Archive #S31-4868: 21AUG2453
Agent Skonn informs me that he had some up with a meathod, when used in conjunction with techniques brought back with the Voyager crew, that will permenately stabalize a sample of Omega. We are awaiting the test results now.

Federation Archive #S31-4873: 3SEP2453
Contact with the science facility has been lost. Investigation teams have been sent to find out the details, but at this time the agency is assuming the worst.

Federation Archive #S31-4877: 11SEP2453
Omega as collapsed. Subspace in that area has been completely obliterated. Even more distressing is the new methods that Agent Skonn had used, namely a warp field inversion wave, has accelerated the degredation exponentially. Current forcasts predict the subspace layer throught the Milky Way will be gone within five years.

Federation Archive #S31-5012: 15JUL2458
[LOG ENTRY: Agent Smith]
I feel this is going to be my last official entry. Subspace is gone, travel is impossible. Even communication between worlds has almost entirely stopped. The stars are quiet, and soon many of the worlds will be too. "The hevens will burn, and a great chasm will appear between the great lands." Those words are centuries old, but have never ringed more true. There is a great darkness upon the galaxey, one that I'm not sure the Federation will survive.

Luna Prime; 25NOV7868

Magistrate Kiara stood up from the computer console in her quarters. They were sparce, as were all the quarters in Luna Prime. The outpost was, as far as anyone knew, the last civilized outpost in the galaxy. Built beneath the surface of the moon following the Great Burn, Earths greatest scientists began working on a solution to the destruction of subspace. Everyone knew the words in the archive, as though it was part of their own thoughts.

Below the lunar metropolis, earth was a different story. 150 years after the Great Burn, Earths economy was completely decimated. No feed, no production, and to many body's triggered a depression on epic scales. What was left of humanity down below had been reduced to paranoid, religeous fanatics that felt as though what happened was an act of god.

As Kiara walked from her quarters to the Science Hall, she thought about the readings that they had been getting recently. One of the old subspace relay stations near 40 Eridani A, having been trying for eons to communicate with the systems in the Sol system. About a week ago, a signal got through. This, in of itself, was not amazing since a majority of the relay stations had been reconfigured in time. This one, however, had been missed in the final days before warp travel became impossible. This ment that the crutial layer of space that made intersteller travel possible could have been repairing itself over time. This was something of great interest to the people of Luna Prime, and they could now start their work.

The founders of Luna Prime had long ago decided that should they find a way to once again reach for the stars, that they would restore the Federation to it's rightfull place. Only more so, they would spread peace to all people and form a Galactic Federation. Now, the problem was, finding a way to prevent the same thing from happening again, and who to send into the darkness. She would have to think a long time on that.

A couple of questions regarding your scenario.

1) Why would Earth's economy collapse? Federation replicator technology means that there is no need to import or export anything from other Federation worlds aside from 'luxury' items whose only value would be that they're from offworld.

2) Betazed is an advanced Federation member world. Why wouldn't they simply employ contraceptive technology to prevent overpopulation? It's never been established that the Betazoids have any taboos against birth control.

3) The future Borg laser-satellite communications network... you'd have to find something faster than light to accomplish this, and lasers aren't it. The communications network the Hirogen inherited used subspace communications just as does Starfleet and everyone else. The satellites merely helped boost the signals and send them much farther than they could have reached otherwise. Lasers only travel at the speed of light, so Borg communications would still take tens of thousands of years to go back and forth across even a few sectors.

Just some food for thought... take it for what's it's worth. :)

1) Replicator technology or not. If it was perfect starships would not have to re-supply, nor would the trade routes be necessary. If you could just make it out of thin air, why would you need to ship that same object over several hundred light years?

2) The over population was due to the sudden serge of refugees. Contraceptive measures or not, it would take to long for population/environment to re-balance. You'd have starvation on massive levels, plagues due to weakend imune systems. Food production methods would strain the environment, causing a shift in climate. Droutes near the equater, polar ice caps expand from the northern and southern reaches.

3) As I said, the Borg are much less deficient. This is meant to be a starting point to simply give the borg room to adapt. This was the easiest, and quickest way for the Borg to adapt to the situation. Who knows what else they've come up with. EDIT: Also, to be honest, I probably wont use them.

Hmm...methinks someone is enamored of Babylon 5. At least, I thought I caught hints of it mixed in. Question-do you have spellcheck? Cause ment isn't a word in any language I know...

I am a bit confused about what happened to Earth-and why it only happened 500 years ago, even though you are 5000 in the future. And what does Betazed have to do with anything? A little more clarification would be nice. That having been said-I like the "flavor" of what you are doing.

Betazed was mentioned just to give an idea of what was going on in different places around the galaxy. It could have been Omicron Ceti V for all I car, the name was largely irrelevant.

As for what happened to earth... I'm not seeing where you got 500 years. Could you be more specific?

It's alright. I do that too.

Anyway, for a bit of a history lesson, 'The Great Burn' is what people now refer to the degradation of subspace.

Earths economy collapsed because, as is typical with humans, when you try to distribute what is now a limited amount of resources, someone decides they deserve more, war ensues.

Around 2709 the scientist, theoretical physicists and the like, started work on Luna Prime. It was designed to be a safe haven for scientists and great thinkers, somewhere they could think freely to try and solve the problem of subspace.

After Luna Prime was completed in 2729, the rest of the population of earth began to get paranoid. Thinking that the Lunarians, as they were being called, where plotting against them. Under threat of nuclear strike, the Lunarians had no choice but to strike first, although they used a non-lethal way to do so. Setting up an array of pulse cannons configured to emit an EMP pulse, Earth fell even further with the loss of technology. However, before that happened a religious cult calling themselves the 'Prophets of the Federation' was able to sneak some of their order onto Luna Prime, where they, and there decendents, have been hiding ever since.
