I wrote an application that figures out what episodes are the best to the worst of Star Trek. I have it available here: http://s000.tinyupload.com/index.php?file_id=04598717721394415840
The way it works is, it'll have you compare 2 episodes with each other and asking which one is better until the list is sorted.
Here's the instructions how it works:
First decompress the zip file into a folder somewhere, it should look like this after you do that
The file called ranklist.exe is the program, when you open that it looks like this:
First you'll need to open the file that contains the episode information
the files that I have included that can be opened are the .txt files
tos/tos_episodelist.txt - every episode of the original series
tng/tng_episodelist.txt - every episode of the next generation
ds9/ds9_episodelist.txt - every episode of deep space nine
voyager/voyager_episodelist.txt - every episode of voyager
enterprise/enterprise_episodelist.txt - every episode of enterprise
movie/movie_list.txt - every star trek movie
every_series.txt - every episode of every series combined
Once you pick one to try, it should look like this:
It'll just keep asking questions until the the list is sorted. The total questions will vary a little bit. When it's finished it'll look like this
This one took probably 60-90 minutes. It asked me 1117 comparison questions before it finished. Then a list appears to the right showing them all sorted from favorite to least favorite.
Every time the program is tried, it creates a log file so you can view each answer and the sorted list afterward.
The log file contains all the answers you gave in that session in the beginning of the file
then at the end it has the rankings from favorite to least favorite
Here's what my favorite to least favorite star trek the next generation is according to this last time trying it
#1 Star Trek First Contact
#2 Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
#3 Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
#4 Star Trek Nemesis
#5 Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
#6 Star Trek (2009)
#7 Star Trek Into Darkness
#8 Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
#9 Star Trek Beyond
#10 Star Trek Generations
#11 Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
#12 Star Trek Insurrection
#13 Star Trek The Motion Picture
Regarding the technical details I used a sorting algorithm called merge sort to do ithttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merge_sort it seemed to be the best one for this. I have it randomize the order of the list after loading so it'll ask differently each time.
The images I used I grabbed from the startrek.com website mostly. I replaced a few of the images that don't do a good job reminding you what the episode is about. There are still some images like that on there. You may just have to google some of the episodes to get a refresher in case the title and picture are not enough to recall the episode.
It is possible to create your own lists of anything you want. It doesn't have to be star trek related (favorite episodes from another series, favorite food, favorite person, favorite pasttime, anything). The format for the list file is like this:
(noun describing items)
(predicate describing what's being compared about the items)
first item
picture of first item (file path relative to where the list file is located)
second item
picture of second item
third item
picture of third item
etc...
Then when this list is loaded successfully it'll ask questions like this "Which (noun) is (predicate)?"
Example would be like this:
ship
more likely to win in a battle
Klingon Bird of Prey
birdofprey.jpg
Defiant
defiant.jpg
Borg Cube
borgcube.jpg
Species 8472
species8472.jpg
Tin Man
tinman.jpg
etc..
I don't know if this would be considered a game or not. It feels kind of like a game to me. Some of the comparisons were really easy. There are also times when it was hard to pick when it showed 2 bad episodes, 2 average episodes, or 2 good episodes and I had to think which one is better. We could post our favorite episodes lists here or make new lists if people find this interesting enough
