Star Trek: Original Series Set Tour, Ticonderoga NY

Apologies if this has been covered but I wanted Trek fan opinions.

Is it worth the trip to sleepy, little Ticonderoga NY to see this display?
I live near Boston so it would be around a five hour drive to get there and I'd hate to waste time going to a "South of the Border" type tourist trap. Place looks good on paper but a lot of stuff does until you get there.

As a Trek fan I find this interesting and as a draftsman who has worked for a scenery company it would be fun to see "behind the curtains" too.

"Space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement"
Mostly out of MDF and Styrofoam!

I didn't know this existed until your post. It would be a longer drive for me but could be interesting. It is rated pretty highly on Trip Advisor FWIW

Thank you for responding Brass. :)
I have seen the reviews on TripAdvisor and they were mostly positive. I was looking to see if anyone here had been and what a "real" Trek fan thought. Because if you are spending part of your day trolling around here you must be a big fan of all things Trek.

I agree on the value of the feedback from someone who is"more than a casual fan" . I am a big star trek fan but I would not be able to discern any mistakes etc. in their props. I am in the Philadelphia area so I would have to stay overnight to make it worth the trip. I'm not much of a outdoorsy person so the other "things to do" in the area are limited. Still it may be worth it. As far as other posts on the subject in the forum, I only found 5 hits and 1 is semi-related:

Apparently Shatner was there in 2018. Whether that means anything to you, I'm not sure. All signs point to a positive experience, for me at least.

The bulk of the cost would be in travel and accommodations. Seems like the ticket itself is around $20.

I personally would consider going at a time when they have a celebrity Trek guest there, so you can get more bang for your buck. Doug Drexler led the tour on the day I went there. And Shatner, Anson Mount, Gates McFadden, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and the Okudas are among the other Trek folks who've visited there. Those tours would be a bit more expensive, though.

They also have a Facebook page. I'd check that out too if you're still on the fence.

I've been twice...once on just a standard tour, and this past spring when William Shatner was there.

It was the best Trek-related experience I've ever had, including countless big Creation conventions and the Vegas Star Trek Experience. The sets are recreated flawlessly. And I LOVE and worship TOS and every little detail....and I still say the sets are flawless.

I went there during the weekend William Shatner was there in May. I gotta tell you, it's the best thing I ever did as a fan. I did a tour with the Okudas on Friday, and they were a joy. Doug Drexler helped me onto the transporter pad so I could get my picture taken. On Saturday, best of all, I got to be on the bridge with William Shatner. I got to tell him how much I've enjoyed his books over the years which I've never been able to do at other cons since they had you through so fast. I got to talk to Mr. Shatner for a couple minutes, and it was a blast. For a few hours, I got to live my dream. If you love TOS, go, it's worth it.

How long of a trip is this from the airport? I'm too lazy to look this stuff up.

Yes, it's about an hour and a half from the Burlington airport to Ticondergoa. I had to stay in Middlebury because I couldn't get a room in Ticonderoga. It was an hour to Middlebury, and then another half hour to Ticonderoga from there. If and when I go again I'm going to try to get a room in Ticonderoga, and take Amtrak from Albany.

According to the set tour's website it's an hour and forty five minutes from the Albany airport to the set tour.

Thank you all for the responses.
I learned about this from an advertisement for the tours with Shatner and Mount. While it would be fun to stroll the sets with "The Shat" the cost is waaaay too much, $1000 with stars $20 without. But finding out that there is an Amtrak station in Ticonderoga is a plus, I like train travel.

Thanks again everyone. :)

It was expensive, but worth it to see "Kirk" back on the Enterprise.
FWIW, I expect to go to Trekonderoga this year.

Great article and pictures JQ!
Looks like a fun day and is definatly on the "to do" list.
As a former set draftsman I am looking forward to the "behind the scenes" look of the place.
And keep in mind that they've made some improvements and additions to the sets since I visited in Oct. 2016. I'm sure that decompression chamber is done by now, and they definitely have the grid over that window in engineering. I'm sure they've been tinkering in other areas as well. :)

Having poured over a Grainger catalog to find just the right perf panel I know it can be like hunting for the Grail. I looked into getting there and I'd have to drive there, 5 hours or take the train to NYC then up to Ticonderoga, 5 hours. I am now weighing these options.
