Star Trek Online game novel - is it in continuity with the main novels

I wondered if the Star Trek Online game novel fits in with the main novel range. For that matter, what about the Online game?
I'm only now downloading the game! It looks fun, and now that it's free, I'm going to give it a try, but I wondered if it, and/or the book, are compatible with the main book series.

No it's not in continuity with the main novel line.

From an interview I did with Michael A. Martin when the book was released in 2010:

While the game, like every tie-in, will have to adhere to canon, it doesn’t share the same continuity as the novels. “The game continuity, which begins just after Star Trek Nemesis and covers the period that follows through 2408, differs in certain respects from Pocket Books’ post-Nemesis timeline,” Michael acknowledges, but there is “an appendix at the back of the book that lays out the game continuity in detail, and it’s drawn directly from the timeline that Cryptic generated for its web site. One of the book’s interviews even gives a sly nod to some of the continuity differences between the game and the standard Pocket Books post-Nemesis Star Trek timeline.

“This book is firmly embedded in Star Trek Online’s own post-Nemesis continuity,” he adds. “But as I said, I did get away with a sneaky reference or two to Pocket’s continuity, though I tried to do it in a way that didn’t call the game continuity into question. But I don’t want to risk spoiling any surprises by saying any more about that here.”

Story wise, its actually a lot of fun. Can be a little clunky gameplay wise, but there's a lot of love put into various aspects of it. It incorporates some elements of the novels, but otherwise has its own canon. You'll find some characters and people that are familiar, and others that aren't.

If you are thinking of rolling federation, I might suggest waiting a day or two for them to release the new revamped federation leveling path. That, or try the romulan path. It was a really nice addition to the game.

Planning on rolling a Cardassian this week with the new mac client.

Any little book references will be cool to come across!
Ultimately I'm sure it's better for the novels not to be tied to the game continuity so they can tell their own stories.

I'm definitely planning on playing Federation. I've been dreaming up my crew this afternoon while waiting for the game to patch itself. Oy vay! Very slow!
Thanks for the heads up on the new Fed leveling path...whatever that is. I'll try and wait then. Any idea when that drops?
Not to get too OT, but I'm curious how much role play is involved in the game? Do the characters have distinct personalities, can you develop friendships and romances in the crew?

They reference the novelverse as an alternate reality in the same multiverse in the STO novel, akin to the prime reality and the new movie one.... but that doesn't really hold up to any scrutiny - although it does fit quite well with a big event early in the Beyer Voyager novels.

The updated leveling is worth waiting for! At the moment I believe the federation storyline is one of the few that hasn't gotten much dusting since the game launched. This new patch will bring it up to date, and have a more involved story. I believe it starts November 12th, but I am very casual with STO so someone else can correct me.

In the mean time, I'd highly suggest the romulan story while you wait! It was the most recent update, and is really solid.

As far as RP goes...unfortunately, I haven't seen too much. Its one massive server, so that's pretty detrimental to RP communities. I'm sure there are a few, but I haven't seen them.

Game RP iiss...kind of a mix? The Romulan storyline has a lot of RP elements, and has a few more unique crewmembers. I don't believe there's any romance like TOR. My crew mates mostly say generic things, but you can promote officers to your bridge positions, and then they will 'talk' to you during missions. You can also write up backstories and character information for them that other people can read.

I was hoping for more role playing, but I figured it wouldn't be there.
The patch finally completed while I was out. Now I'm soooo frustrated to have to wait until Tuesday to make my crew! But it sounds like it will be worth the wait.
I seriously need some kind of primer for this game, but I'm in the wrong forum for that, this is just where I hang out the most at this site. I don't really understand if I can have a Romulan ship and a Federation ship both. I also don't know if I'm going to be starting at the begining of the game's story or starting at the current "episode".
Sorry if I'm going too far OT, I'll try to move this where it belongs.
Really pretty avatar btw Mimi!
