Despite the fact that I've been aware that the MMO has been on the rocks for some time, I'm depressed by this announcement. I'm excited for the movie, but it seems that there has been more bad news than good news for Trek fans. I suppose I can use the money that I would've spent on the game and a new computer to clothe my children.

Might aswell. It would have been so weird. Hope they can try salvage it into a good single player game

Sounds like a bummer, but it also opens the door for someone else. The couple of screenshots they put out looked really bad to me, very cartoonish, so in the end, this could be a good thing.

I'm not sure which images you saw, but I would've loved to have lived virtually in this world:

I enjoy video games with a Star Trek theme, but I feel that the MMORPG (had they been able to pull it off) would've been the first real Star Trek game. I loved Elite Force II, but in many ways it was just an FPS with a Star Trek skin. (I'd love an Elite Force III by the way.) I want the sense of team work and exlporation that embodies Trek.

In order to appease some of the more assholey types on this board, I'm going to quote my post from TrekToday News Items instead of double posting.

    Shit.

Oh well. I can't say I'm not surprised.

What is worse, no game or a poorly playing one?

A poorly playing game is worse. Better that this die now than the travesty it was going to be.

I'm not sure why the general assumption is that the game was going to munch ass. Since we'd only seen so much as a couple of screenshots and concept art.

Maybe it's rubbish. Maybe it's great. No one knows.

Hopefully something can be made by the fans. I'd love to see a co-op version materialize. Isn't that what Second Life is? Almost entirely made up of user textures, models, content?

This is "Star Trek" fandom. We are skeptical without reason. Better to celebrate the failure of others' hard work and creativity than take the chance of being a little disappointed.

I can't see how Star Trek MMORPG would have been anything but a joke, I can imagine general chat already

"OOC: LKNG 4 MEDIC 4 GROUP FOR CARDSIAN MINES INSTANCE WE GOT SEC OFFICER"

    *shudders*

WTS: WTS LVL 6 RED PHASER PM WITH OFFeR

I really hope though that they salvage what they got and try to release a somewhat good single player game

    Damn.

    ...

I can find no fault in this statement.

    ...

Very sad, and very true... :(

The screenshot link above is fantastic. The one I saw, a month ago or so, had a ridiculously stupid looking starfield, and an alien that looked like a cartoon. It made me nervous where the graphical style was going, but at least it was going then!
I'm definetly not celebrating "failure". The only failure in this picture anyway is the bad business dealings on the part of Perpetual management.

It's a shame, but I'm not surprised. I've always thought that the Trek universe isn't particularly well-suited to the traditional MMO style of gaming, anyway.

And when the developers hinted that they'd be going with a "SecondLife" style of subscribing (free basic subscriptions but you have to pay to buy individual items in the game) it seemed to be moving in a really bad direction.

Maybe it will be resurrected someday in a more suitable form.

Nothing like being cancelled 2 years after you were supposed to come out.

Ah well, what else is on?

Lol, don't even give them the idea to do that.

Perhaps Starship Creator III would be a better option? :)
