I was more surprised that Night at the Museum 2 beat Terminator. WOW, indeed.

XI's still in first run, and now that we're out of the first two weeks, the theater exhibitors can make more money on showings. This just proves it's got some legs. Theaters do not add screens for films that are tailing off.

ST possibly added some screens in smaller markets too. Maybe even drive-ins (Remember those?)

In our area (Indianapolis), even though Night At The Museum II has the IMAX showings now, ST got added midnight IMAX showings Fri-Sat-Sun. It could even add some more IMAX showings depending on how Night At The Museum does in tis IMAX run.

In one city which will remain nameless, the second run and bargain theaters are all the rage, people are very very cheap in this city, and these theaters are very busy. 4 months later when they are in those, the lineups are like the movies just came out.
So more people are going to the movies at cheaper prices, in different locations.

When I was visiting this city once, I saw a major release 6 months after it's first run the theater was packed solid.
This is the money made in between release closeout and DVD.
DVD release almost always shuts the movie down in those theatres.

So if Trek can sell a bunch more tickets at $5.00 that's good too.

Any idea's for the DVD release, I imagine they will want in stores for the Christmas season

The studios and distributors have very specific contracts with theater chains (exhibitors) regarding release patterns, who makes what when, how many screens and the minimum length of a movie's run. The biggest profits for studios/distributors are generally in the first two weeks - that's why big event films are front loaded to open on as many screens as possible. There is a sliding scale on box office, so the longer a film stays in theaters, the less the studios make and the more the exhibitors make. A film with "legs" (a movie that does consistent business over many weeks building through word of mouth) is the best kind of movie for theater exhibitors (a la Slumdog Millionare).
For a major film like HP, the exxhibitors may have to guarantee 4-6 weeks. The contract will also state when a film can go into a secondary market. Some of the really big exhibitors, like Regal, can even keep a second run house from showing a film if that theater is within a certain distance of the major. I've seen it happen.

I think T4 will do a relatively fast fade (a dreadful movie IMO, so glad I didn't have to pay to see it). That can only benefit XI. At one of our local theaters, ST had as many showings scheduled as T4. Plus, our local IMAX manager (a Kerasotes cineplex) said NATM2 is doing about half of what XI was doing for them. They hated taking ST of the IMAX he said they were selling anywhere from 1/2 to 3/4 capacity on IMAX weekday showings. No doubt, a lot of people felt like they didn't need to experience NATM2 in IMAX and weren't willing to pay the extra$$$, whereas those seeing XI do appreciate the considerable impact IMAX offers.

We have a few of those theaters in Indy - I love their 50 cent Tuesdays - and people line up here as well. However, at $2-$5 a pop, second run doesn't impact the BO to any great degree. But I know families on a budget will flock to XI once it gets into second run. BTW, I've seen some flicks in our second run when they are out on DVD.

Star Trek XI could accomplish that, I doubt that Nemesis could have though.
