Star Trek First Contact theme

How would you describe the overall tone of the theme? If you can describe the theme in one or two words what would it be?

"Tuneless"

ETA: Sorry, I know you said "First Contact" but my brain interpreted that to mean "Generations".

Two words for First Contact: "Quite Nice"

"Much needed".

I really liked that it was calm and contrasted with the high action of the film itself. The score for the whole film was awesome! (So awesome they recycled parts of it for Insurrection...)

It's not his best but I like it, makes a good web browsing background.

I wake up to this every morning. Have an alarm on my mini hifi that switches the CD player on. :bolian:

I saw the film in the theatre in '96 with a non-fan. One of the things she noted most was how the tone of the opening music surprised her and set the tone of the film. She was expecting a Star-Warsy march and was instead greeted with a quietly dramatic selection that bespoke of a more grown-up film. I still feel the same way. having seen all the previous films, I was very surprised when that opening music hit. I remember thinking "wow- this is pretty terrific for Star Trek". I had been anticipating Maestro Goldsmith's return to the series and he gave us something new and mature.

Nice sum up.

Confidence-inspiring. For a short time at least, it made me feel like Trek was back on the rails after the train wreck that was Generations.

I really like this rendition: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3jM7I0IwVY

Just rewatched this film this weekend, and I was struck by the theme. Allyn's right that it doesn't quite seem right for the movie on first glance, but I think that's what I like about it. It has an optimistic, thoughtful tone to it. First Contact is in many ways about the promise of the future, about the fact that though things may seem dark now, they will get better. A lot of this is implicit in the film, though; we are told about the awesomeness of the 24th century but do not see it. But thanks to Jerry Goldsmith, we do hear it.

Elegiac (not getting the hate towards it at all).

I don't hate Goldsmith's main theme for First Contact at all. I think it's a very good piece of work. Quite romantic, really.

I'm not sure it fits the film.

Exactly. I don't hate the main theme. Jerry Goldsmith's work always was beautiful....it just didn't work (for me) as a good opening theme for a movie that starts out pretty dark. It is perfect for an end titles piece, but as an opener for that particular film.....not so much...again, in my humble opinion.

Star Trek VI had an awesome opening theme, even if it was somewhat based on "The Planets", but something a bit more intense like this would've sat with me a bit better for FC. :)

It's why I loved the opening theme-let for Nemesis....it set the tone for the upcoming scene.... and I loved the end titles when it got released on home video...much more epic and suited to Nemesis than the end titles when it was theatrically released. (IIRC, the end titles for Nemesis was much more laid back, so I was glad it got the re-work for home video. The official soundtrack I believe uses the theatrical end titles, not the home video end titles.)
