CREW ROSTER AND EPISODE GUIDE

Star Trek:Edison

Episode 1:Reunions

Stardate 38675.2 (Sep 4, 2361)

“A mysterious object journeys though Federation Space unopposed. I’m Kate Callahan for the Galaxian News Network and that’s our top story.

“There have been reports of sightings of an unidentified object drifting though Federation space, bringing apprehension and panic to the Federation star systems it travels though.

“Local Planetary leaders fear it could be ether a weapon of mass destruction deployed by the Cardassians sent to destroy key Federation worlds, or a planetary probe similar to the one that wreaked havoc on Earth over 75 years ago.

“What’s even more disturbing is the lack of response from both the Federation Council and Starfleet Command on the matter. Starfleet has thousands of starships in active service and not one has been sent to investigate this mystery object, not even a mothballed garbage scow.

“I want to end this newscast with a question to both the Federation Council and Starfleet Command. Why the silence and why is this object being allowed to travel though Federation space unchallenged? Has the long war with the Cardassians turned the Federation soft and made it suddenly stop caring about the welfare of its member worlds? I’m sure the citizens of the Federation would want the answer to that.

"For more information and hourly updates about this object, tune into All Things FTL with Brethar Vimlot. For the Galaxian News Network, I’m Kate Callahan.”

I love the news broadcast concept. My own story plans to bring in a Vulcan news reporter who hounds the crew of the Vulcan. Not that much has been done to show the daily lives of regular citizens and a news organization would have to be a staple.

I have used the news broadcast concept before in other fanfics that I have written. Plus I have a fascination with journalism.

A fascinating opening premise! Has Starfleet become so indolent that the media has to spur them to action, or is something else going on here?

More, please.

A mix of both.

Stardate 38677.18 (Sep. 5, 2361)

Captain’s log, stardate 38677.18 The Edison is currently en route to Starbase One for resupply, repairs, and the rotation of crew members. Meanwhile, the Edison’s long-range sensors have been monitoring unusual subspace broadcasts coming from near the Delphi star system.

----

USS Edison-Captain’s Quarters

Captain Grace McCallister found herself sitting up in bed, her knees tucked up against her chest, as she gazed out the cabin window, watching the warp-smeared stars whiz by.

She was restless from having to fend off multiple incursions into Federation Space by Cardassian Galor-class cruisers while on routine patrol of the Federation-Cardassian Border. Grace has an extremely personal and adverse history when it comes to dealing with crusty skinned spoonheads.

One such example occurred three years ago, when the USS Edison almost found itself destroyed after being ambushed and encircled by three Keldon-Class cruisers near the Solarion star system.

The battle was a never-ending nightmare, with the ship taking heavy weapons fire from all flanks, leaving the vessel with no opportunity to counterattack, call for reinforcements, or retreat from battle.

It seemed all was lost for the Edison, when one of the cruisers in perpetration for an attack run accidentally sets off a nearby gravtic mine that started a chain reaction, destroying all three ships.

The badly damaged Edison was luckily far enough away not to be impacted by the explosion from the mine and used the opening to escape to the nearest starbase for emergency repairs.

The battle scarred Grace deeply, both on a mental and physical level. Over 40 crew members lives were lost in the line of duty, including several senior officers. Many crew members were also wounded during the battle.

Grace herself was injured when the damaged Ops console that she made emergency repairs to short-circuited and exploded. The burst of sparks knocked her backward and scalded her right forearm with second- and third-degree burns.

The high number of dead and wounded crew members psychologically traumatized her deeply, as it was the first time that someone had died under her command. She had questioned her abilities to be a commanding officer to the point where she strongly considered stepping down as commanding officer of the USS Edison and becoming an engineering instructor at Starfleet Academy.

She refused to heal her burn scars out of respect for the lives of the crew members that were lost in the line of duty under her watch. The burn scars also serve as a reminder of what she would’ve left behind if she had died; her crew, her friends, her family, and her daughter Claire.

She closed her eyes at the thought of her only child, as she leaned over and grabbed one of her favorite pictures off the nightstand.

It was a picture of Claire and herself that was taken on her daughter’s first day at Starfleet Academy. They were both standing in front of the massive elm tree located near the parade grounds. She had her arm around Claire, smiling proudly at her daughter, while Claire looked bashful.

She remembered some of the advice that she gave her daughter on that day, like searched out Boothby for guidance. A small brown and white beagle suddenly hops onto the captain’s bed.

"Archer!" she happily greeted the beagle as she watched the canine trot across the bed and snuggled up against her.

"You're having trouble sleeping too?" she calmly asked her companion while gently massaged behind his ears.

The dog purred softly in response to the query, completely enjoying the attention he was getting as he sniffed at the picture and barked.

"That’s my daughter Claire, Archer." You’ll be introduced to her once the Edison has arrived at Starbase One," Grace said as she thought about the circumstances of how her daughter was posted to the Edison.

USS Edison-Captain’s Ready Room

Grace leaned back in her chair, as she nursed a cup of her mother’s special coffee blend that was spiked with a very small amount of Romulan ale. She was about to record a log entry when the door chimed.

"Enter." she said automatically while she looked down at her PADD device.

The doors hissed open, and Yeoman Trena Saperstein entered. The captain's personal assistant stood in attention, as she waited patiently to be recognized.

Grace looked up and smiled. "At ease, Yeoman." "Is there something I can do for you?"

The yeoman relaxed her feet apart and stated, "Yes, Captain, I need to get your signature on these documents, and Admiral Wyatt has tried to contact you for the past hour; he wanted to speak with you privately face-to-face over subspace communications."

She took the PADD device, quickly signed her signature , and handed it back to her assistant.

"Thank you, Yeoman; you’re dismissed."

"Yes, Captain." Yeoman Saperstein nodded as she exited the ready room.

Grace straightened herself up in her seat and centered her attention on the desktop viewer.

"Computer, open channel..."

The UFP logo disappeared from the screen, and in its place was the smiling face of her father, Vice Admiral Marcus Wyatt.

"Hello, Dad, I'm sorry for have not gotten back to you sooner. There was a bad infestation of scaly headed spoons not far from the Lyshan system. So how are you doing? "

He chuckled at her daughter’s reference to the Cardassians before he spoke, "I’m fine, just started a new semester of teaching classes. So how are you ?"

"I’m okay; I'm just stressed out from this damn war. So how are Mom and Claire?" She asked her father.

"Your mother and Claire are good. Your mother has been busy with her plants back home. She’s been worried about you.

"Claire has been busy too, as a teacher’s assistant here at the academy. She’s developed an awful habit where she talks your head off about whatever is on her mind. I know it’s just a facade she’s kept up to hid her true emotions: dejected that her friends already left for their assignments in space, while she’s stuck here on Earth; low-spirited that you departed so soon after her graduation ceremony."

Grace felt guilty about having to leave almost immediately after her daughter’s graduation, just barely enough time to give Claire a quick goodbye hug before she boarded the shuttlecraft and headed back to the ship. An ecological catastrophe had transpired on the planet Sigma Kai VI, and the Edison was the only vessel in the area to respond.

"Dad, the Edison is scheduled to make a stop at Starbase One in about two to three weeks for crew rotations and supplies, and I thought I would surprise Claire with a visit." She paused as her eyes narrowed in suspicion at her father’s sheepish appearance. "Dad, is there something you’re not telling me?

"Well, Grace, one of your former commanding officers stopped by to see me a few weeks back, Admiral Bilko Silvers."

She took a quick glance at the model of the Miranda-Class ship that she had on display before speaking. "Bilko Silvers" is a name I have not heard in such a long time. So how’s the old card shark these days?" She asked her father.

"He’s doing well since he became the head of Starfleet Personnel. We just had a drink when the Admiral came straight out with the news that he paid back the life debt he owed you and arranged Claire’s posting to the Edison."

She doesn’t even fully remember the circumstances of how she saved her former CO’s life, but she’s really touched that he repaid the life debt with such an act of kindness. It would be an insult not to honor her mentor’s request.

The only concerns she has about her daughter serving on the Edison are the negative reactions from the lower ranked crew members and Claire dying under her command, but she would feel at ease knowing her daughter would be under the command of someone that she could trust. She’s excited about taking Claire under her wing and teaching her a few things, while making up for the lost time that she wasn’t a part of her daughter’s life.

"Hello? Grace? Are you there?" Her father said it loud enough to have her snapped out of the deep trance she fell into while she processed the news about her daughter being posted to the Edison.

"I’m here, Dad; sorry about that. My mind must have wondered off." She apologized. "Please tell, Adm. Silvers I’m really touched about what he’s doing for Claire and that I would sign off on her posting to make it official."

"I will tell him. Also, I will have Claire call you once she gets the news."

"That will be great, Dad." "Please send Mom and Claire my love."

"I will. You take care of yourself, okay."

"You do the same, alright."

The UFP logo reappeared on the screen, as Grace swiveled her chair around and looked at the stars.

So a captain with a touch of PTSD... and a legacy family, considering her father and daughter are both in the service as well. I recall the setup from a description you provided several months ago. It's a good setup.

One recommendation - while the grammar is generally good, there is a lot of slippage back and forth between present tense and past tense, which can be distracting to the reader. Toward the end of the flashback sequence, you seem to have settled on present tense, so I would recommend combing back through this entry in edit mode and changing all the verbs used to describe current action to present tense.

Alternately, you could change them all to past tense. Most fantasy/sci-fi writers use past tense, but that's really a matter of the writer's preference. But you'll want to pick one and stick with it or you'll have your readers focusing on your grammar/usage instead of focusing on your story.

Thanks!! rbs

Thanks for your comments RBS. I thought you would have the noticed the reference with the beagle's name.

Nice character building. In just a couple of paragraphs, we already know Grace.

Stardate 38677.85 (Sep 5, 2361)

U.S.S Edison-Corridor(Deck 2)

Archer excitedly jogged down the ship’s corridor alongside his tired guardian, as the canine smelled out his surroundings and enjoyed the pats on the head given to him from the crew members that passed by. It wasn’t very often that the spunky little canine got to visit a new part of the ship.

He only got to visit the lackluster Botanical Gardens or the scary Sickbay, when not confined to the deck corridor where he and his owner resided. He wondered where she was taking him today. His enthusiasm became more pronounced upon approaching the turbolift.

"Archer, calm down!" Captain Grace McCallister commanded, as the doors swished open, and the two entered the empty turbolift. "Deck 1," she told the computer, and the turbolift started to move.

USS Edison-Main Bridge

The turbolift doors swished open, as Grace picked up Archer and carried him onto the bridge. The canine’s curiosity was now in overdrive as he looked around at all the blinking lights, and the people tapping noisy buttons, while listening to the crew members chatting.

"Morning Captain, and to our little morale booster," Commander Icid Gaihia, the Edison’s First Officer, greeted, as she patted the beagle on the head, much to his delight. He really liked the person with the ridges on their nose.

" Commander," Grace acknowledged back to the Bajorian as she took her place in the command chair. "I noticed the Chief Science Officer is not at his post. He’s not the type to be late for duty." She inquired.

"Lt. Cmdr. Drak was admitted to sickbay last night with a moderate case of Bolian Influenza," Commander Icid responded. Dr. Gehen, the Asst. Chief Medical Officer, says he’s going to recover, but he is going to be off duty for the next couple of days."

" Status report on the strange broadcasts coming from the Delphi system," Captain McCallister ordered, as Yeoman Trena Saperstein handed her a mug of coffee and took Archer to her ready room.

"Captain, long range sensors indicate communications are still being transmitted but are no longer coming from the Delphi System. The location is now unknown, "answered Lt. Tai-Anna, the Asst. Chief Science Officer.

" Lt. Tai-Anna, I want you to calculate all possible trajectories for the object’s next destination using the Delphi system as a point of reference. I hope to have the information in my hands by the time we arrive at Starbase One," she ordered the Vulcan. She was already missing the Bolian’s science officer cheerful personality.

"Already feeding the data into the computer, Captain."

"Very well, Lieutenant. Chief, what’s the current ETA to Starbase One?"

"Captain, at our current speed, the Edison was expected to arrive at Starbase One in approximately 24 hours," reported Chief James Fogerty, the Edison’s Chief of Boat, who is temporarily filling in for Lt. Cmdr. Adora Glenn, the Chief Conn Officer.

"Thank you, Chief," Grace replied as she turned her attention to Commander Icid. "Lt. Cmdr. Glenn still feeling under the weather, Commander?" She sipped her coffee.

"Yes, Captain," Icid replied. "The CMO has further limited her duties, meaning no strenuous action of any kind until the child that she carries comes to full term." She stated

The Captain just sighed; she could sympathize with what her Chief Conn Officer was dealing with from being pregnant, but that would leave the Edison Flight Team understaffed. She doesn’t want to add any additional responsibilities to the Chief of Boat's already busy schedule. The flight team had been doing their part as well, pulling double shifts at the Conn.

"Ensign Zh’Nann, report on the operational status of the Edison." Grace smiled encouragingly at the nervous female Ktarian, who’s working her first Alpha Shift at the operation’s station.

The young ensign took a deep breath before speaking, "Captain, all es-es-essential systems are op-op-operational and functioning within normal pa-pa-parameters. Chief Engineer Blix had reported the holodecks were still offline from the Edison’s previous skirmish with the Ca-Ca-Cardassians. He also reported that any remaining repairs would have to be completed at the starbase. Sorry about the stumbling of my words, Captain. "

"Thank you, Ensign, for your report, and I think you did just fine." Grace beamed.

"Thank you, Captain."

"And lastly, Mr. Thess, I hope Edison’s security department had a peaceful night."

"Captain, permission to speak with you privately in your ready room. There’s an urgent matter that needs your attention," the Andorian Chief of Security requested.

Grace just sighed. "Granted; Commander Icid, the bridge is yours," Grace said. She rose from the captain’s chair and motioned for Lt. Cmdr. Thess to follow her to the ready room.

USS Edison-Captain’s Ready Room

Archer looked up from the bed he laid on as he watched his guardian and the pale person with the things poking out of their head entered the room.

"Please take a seat, Mr. Thess," Grace offered as she sat down at her desk.

"Thank you, Captain," the Andorian responded. He pulled up a chair and sat down.

"So something happened last night, Commander?" Grace questioned.

"Yes, Captain, there was a drunken brawl in the mess hall late last night, involving two crew members."

"Let me guess, Lt. Robert Graves from engineering and Lt. Eric Friestadt from operations both had too much to drink again?" Grace frowned.

"You’re correct about Lt. Friestadt having too much to drink, but the other crewmember that had too much to drink this time around was Petty Officer Falco, the shuttle pilot."

"So, any idea who instigated the drunken brawl?"

"Captain, according to Saria Lefleur, the bartender who witnessed the incident. Both Lt. Friestadt and Petty Officer Falco at first kept to themselves, not bothering anyone. It was after both crewmen became intoxicated that the trouble started. A drunken Lt. Friestadt began to unexpectedly demean Falco’s Avaionan heritage,

Falco took offense to Lt. Friestadt’s choice of words and proceeded to literally claw and peck at Lt. Friestadt’s face. It required several security guards to break up the fight. As of this moment, Friestadt is currently recovering in sickbay while Falco is being held in confinement in the ship’s brig," Lt. Cmdr. Thess, answered.

Captain McCallister cringed, knowing the Avaionans take pride in their heritage and they had short tempers towards those who deliberately disparage it.

" Mr. Thess, I’m wanting a complete investigation to be conducted about this incident. I’m demanding statements from anyone else who witnessed the fight. I’m expecting both Lt. Cmdr. Frestradt and Petty Officer Falco to be sobered up and questioned about what exactly happened and why,

"Both crewmen are being ordered to undergo physiological testing once we arrive at Starbase One. Lt. Frestradt would be held in confinement, once he’s cleared to leave sickbay. A security guard would be assigned to keep watch over him until then,

"Punishments would be decided pending the results of the physiological testing and the outcome of the investigation. Security guards are to be in the mess hall and ship lounge areas at all times, until further notice."

"I would carry out your orders at once." Lt. Cmdr. Thess stood up.

"You’re dismissed, Commander."

Lt. Cmdr. Thess nodded and exited the ready room.

"Archer, it seemed like today was going to be one of those days. With an overworked crew, a crewman in the brig, two officers in sickbay, one pregnant officer confined to limited duty, and her daughter joining the crew," Captain McCallister said to him. She just hoped things would improve once the new ship’s counselor had came aboard, as she poured herself a glass of Centaurian cola and quickly gulped it down.

Love the dog's perspective...

Agreed. Sweet critter design on the Avaionan - looking forward to seeing that crew member both from Grace's perspective and, more amusingly, Archer's. (Big fan of a beagle named "Archer.")

Captain McCalllister has a very formal and didactic way of addressing her crew, who seem to respond with a high level of formality and a little tension. This puts her more in the mold of a Jellico than a Picard. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm a fan of the oft-unjustly-maligned Edward Jellico. She also gives off the sense of a recently promoted captain, still finding her command voice. She seems more than a little tense. It will be interesting watching her settling in and see how her style works with this crew.

Thanks!! rbs
