As a newbie, I joined the forum to read and comment on fics in preparation for my own.
I suppose I'm fishing for a discussion more than just tips but more to the point I think writers should be able to band ideas around.
My idea is for a fic set at the turn of the 25th century in the late 2390s. Basically, I think fics have got to stand out and be original and setting a series two decades after Nemesis allowed for more creativity.
I want to use the Romulans as a way to comment on present day Russia, a country which has abandoned a totalitarian past but is still constrained by relics of that time. I like the idea of the Romulans as an uneasy ally of the Federation.
I want to use the Cardassians to make a point about Germany and how countries can cast aside the totalitarian past. I think Cardassia entering the Federation compared with Romulus becoming less certain of her relationship with the Federation would be a good juxtaposition.
Do others feel that this is the way things were likely to go after the Dominion War with regards to the Cardassians and the Romulans?
I have a crew and details of the ship worked out but I won't bore anyone with every little fragment of information. There will be a story revolving around a Trill officer who experiences an unplanned joining. There will also be a Cardassian doctor whose family were killed in the Lakarian City massacre.
I'm working on the first story just now but rather than go through the overdone maiden voyage story, I'm telling the story of a new CO, Captain Bane Mather (Bajoran male), arriving on the ship to replace the deceased captain. The crew are mourning a Starfleet hero and Bane's unconventional style ruffles feathers. Throughout the story, he wins the respect of the crew.
