Star Trek Crew Question

Commodore

Other than like the Enterprise where the same crew served on her for like 20 years straight -- what was the typical range of time a person served on a ship in the story?

We don't know, but I'll say this--I can't imagine that the CO of a starship likes to jump from ship to ship too often in that role. I think they probably become very closely affiliated with that ship and stay in that captain's chair until they get bumped up to Admiral or retire or whatever. Picard was commanding Stargazer for 22 years, and only stopped when he lost her.

People in other roles probably stay if they are angling for a future on that ship, and if they aren't, leave whenever a good opportunity at another posting arrives. I don't imagine it would be too different from any other job in that respect.

Well, remember Chekov was assigned to the Reliant and Sulu to the Excelsior (and Scotty briefly to the Excelsior as well)

If you're referring to TUC, remember they were reassembled for that one special mission, so who knows where they all were just prior to that (I assume Spock was captain, but who knows since he was heavily involved with diplomacy)

Edit: I realize now that the OP was talking about the original Enterprise, not the E-A, where the Admiral in TSFS says "Jim, the Enterprise is 20 years old."

However, remember that there was a different crew under Pike's command before Kirk and co... and I assume we're only talking about the main crew here

About an episode. Sometimes two. A few lucky souls got more.

davidant32,

I mean -- *other* than the core crew of the enterprise... you just cited me an example of a crew member on the Enterprise...

I call it the "Red Shirt Blues" in the event that you had the misfortune to be a Red Shirt, your Trek life span would be about 5 minutes :)

Picard was on the Stargazer for 20 years!

What's it like in the real Navy? How long does a captain stay with one ship?
The crew being enlistees, I don't imagine any of them stick around for more than one or two 4-year stretches.

In the real Navy, a command tour is about 2-4 years. Lucky COs get a bonus tour as a CO of a ship, but most are either promoted to flag rank, posted to ride a desk, or (the vast majority) retire.

With enlistees: Most serve a 2-6 year hitch and leave, but a goodly number make the military a career and re-enlist until retirement. These become your NCOs, your Petty Officers and the like.
