Star Trek box office may come up short

Star Trek has the 15th highest May opening and the 28th all time biggest grossing weekend.

Yeah. I'm sure the suits at Paramount are wondering what went wrong.

This morning's Variety article on the movie's immensely successful opening includes this:

Also:

In a promising sign of the film’s good word of mouth, “Star Trek” was up slightly from Friday to Saturday, a point even rival studios commented on.

“J.J. Abrams did everything we could have asked for in re-energizing this franchise and making a fantastic movie for everyone,” said Par vice chair Rob Moore.

This is Star Trek now.

I'm not too worried about overall box office take. I saw the film three times since Thursday and every single time I overheard people of all ages raving about it as they left the theater. I also heard several say they would see it again next weekend. I know my little corner of the market isn't much, but if those comments are indicative of what's going on everywhere else, then this film should have good legs for at least a couple of weeks.

Oh, and I heard a comment last night after the film that brought a smile to my face. I heard someone in the parking lot exclaim, "That was better than Star Wars!" :)

Some of those people in those comments section seem, umm, not so smart.
Agreed. Those comments also feature a surprising level of hatred toward the film that sure contradicts the reactions I've been reading everywhere else. Still, I haven't seen the movie myself, so I can't personally say that I disagree with them yet, but I suspect I probably will. Anyway, here is my favorite comment from that site:
Massive dissappointment.... How can you have a star treck movie without chewbacca... Any where the hell was jabba da hut!!!
