I know this is completely out of nowhere, but I've always thought whenever they show someone in bed on any of the ST shows, the beds look so damned uncomfortable. Thin covers, and cold-looking sheets. Is it just that Star Fleet is cheap when it comes to bedding, or what. They just never look comfy to me.

I completely agree and have noticed it before myself, especially the stupid tiny triangular pillows on DS9. There is a scene in Deep Space Nine where Jadzia is lying on one and tried to cuddle up to it but it just looks absurd.
I was also confused by the really shiny covers we saw in TNG.

I wonder if that's supposed to be like those thermal blankets they use for marathon runners these days.

I think those pillows were a part of the Cardassian decor, but I don't see why the Starfleeters would feel the need to use pillows left behind by Cardassians ;S

I assume they use some special futuristic-bedding that's more comfortable than it looks. ;)

'Out of nowhere' is my middle name. Great question.

    I have no insight.

Perhaps they turn the heating right up so they don't need a mass of blankets to keep warm?

Yep, that's what I thought. They sure like to sleep light-dressed (Picard's pajamas springs --uncomfortably!-- to mind...)

Yes, those damned shiny blankets (and shiny pillow cases in some episodes), they looked so itchy and uncomfortable. It's in an effort by the production staff to make things look all "futurey".

It reminds me of the scene (from who knows what episode) where Riker is cooking eggs in his quarters but is using "futurey" looking utensils and bowls that don't look the least bit ergonomic, in fact the bowl had no flat bottom and rolled around the table, it was ridiculous.

Interestingly Data had "modern" sheets when he experimented with his sleep program in Phantasms. Strangely he seemed to sleep on a pull out bed from his loveseat.

I think they're just trying to look modern/futuristic. The beds themselves seem okay, at least to me; I like firm mattresses. But those pillows... <shudder>

Those sheets and pillows are designed for thermal adaptations to the user, easy to clean, will never stain, breathable, highly compress for storage, change color to match the decor, completely absorb odors so your bed partner will never notice, and can be rolled into a lethal weapon in the event of enemy boardings.

    Remember, it's the 24th century.

Looking up through the big windows as the stars streak by would be cool.

I know I'm in the minority, but I love Star Trek TNG and DS9 decor

    Picard's view is just fantastic
