Star Trek and the moon.

I know I have seen every episode of every star trek, but don't remember anything about an episode with the moon involved. I know most of the shows take place outside the solar system, but I have never seen even a base I can remember on the moon. Was there something?

Was it something they purposely stay away from?

Thanks

In the movie First Contact, Riker mentions something like 15 million people living on the moon. I haven't seen anywhere near every episode of Trek, so maybe they've had more of it somewhere, but not that I'm personally aware of.

Other than what Riker said I don't think the moon has ever been shown in a Star Trek movie or episode with people living on it.

The opening credits for Star Trek: Enterprise show (or is reported to show) one of the lunar colonies mentioned in "First Contact". There is also a two episode arc in the fourth season of Enterprise (Demons, Terra Prime) that features a lunar mining base as part of the story. In the first episode of the arc, they show off the facility and explain its function during an investigative visit from Trip and T'Pol.

doesn't Beverly Crushers backstory have her being born on the Moon? That particular fact never made it on screen however.

Well, everyone knows that Earth had a Moonbase, but due to a nuclear accident on Septemeber 13th, 1999....

Riker mentioned there's a body of water called "Lake Armstrong", though the science nerd in me protests at the notion of a terraformed moon: it's too small to retain its own atmosphere.

Thanks everyone, just wondering it didn't seem to be a mentioned or shown much in the shows, which I thought kind of odd in a way.

Astrosmurf, thanks for those references will look them up. I have seen all the shows, but of course as I get older my memory is fading a touch.

The moon landing and star trek got me interested in astronomy and cosmology that I have been studying for forty years.

Thanks for all the references and comments.

We also saw the Enterprise-D flying close over the Moon in the first season episode "Conspiracy".

I recall reading an article years ago about terraforming. They mentioned that the moon could have an atmosphere but it would need to be replenished though, on the scale of every thousand years, before it got too thin to breathe.

Wasn't there a Voyager episode where Chakotay was dreaming and he'd realize he was dreaming when he'd see an image of the moon?

I never bothered watching Voyager, so I don't know for sure.

Your inner nerd should then realize it would take thousands of years to lose that atmosphere. Not an issue for starfleet level technology.

If Ed Straker would have still been in charge that accident would never have happened. :)

About "Lake Armstrong" on the Moon...
Just thinking maybe it isn't a real "water" lake.

As in, the Sea of Tranquility and the Sea of Storms aren't really "seas" on the Moon. They are large flat lava plains that appear to be seas from a distance, if you thought maybe there was vast open water on the Moon.

So when people start living on the Moon, maybe they will see lesser-sized, similar areas and name them "lakes" rather than "seas".

Just an idea.

The problem I had with Riker going on about the moon looking so different in the 24th century is that we have seen the 24th century moon on screen a few times on TNG. It looked exactly the same as it does today.

Maybe the habitable areas of the moon are in enclosed environments with full life support that is also see-through, so a large lake can be contained in one of them. Also with flora and trees like a para-terraforming setup.
