"Star Trek Adventures" question: miniatures

Does this RPG system require the use of the miniatures sold alongside it or can you work without them? I've been interested in collecting the books, but don't really want to invest in a system where I have to buy tokens as well.

Nothing is required except (IIRC) the basic rulebook, a pair of d20 dice, a few d6 dice, and pencil and paper. The miniatures and such are optional.
