Star Trek Academy: Collision Course is out!

^ From what's been mentioned, they take place in different timeframes - the book when they first come to the Academy, the film sometime latter when both are officers. Where contradictions might arise, however, is that the film is likely, for dramatic purpuses, to show this as Kirk and Spock's first meeting, contradicting the book's idea that they met at the Academy.

Read it. One of the worst Trek books I've read in a long time.

I'm not yet done reading this one yet. I'm up to chapter 37. But I can say that Kirk and Spock do feel wrong somehow. They feel out of character. There are moments when they do feel spot on, but mostly they do feel off. Amanda is written well. Sarek, I'm still trying to decide upon. And another problem is this contradicts the Brother's Keeper books and that's not nice.

I'm finishing those up now, and I have to say that may not be such a bad thing. I'm just not buying into that story.

Still, this new one sounds off. Too bad, as I've enjoyed the other Shatnerverse books. Though I've only done the audiobooks mostly, and maybe there's less to be offended by with the abridgements for audio...

I've read most of the Shatnerverse books and liked all but one. I don't know if I'll read this one, though. I'm not big on the Academy theme, and from the title I'll imagine Jay Leno and Pat Morita playing Kirk and Spock.

I am glad I took it out of the library. I'm almost done. I want to find out how it ends. But it's not all that great a book. I think of it as fluff.

The academy theme is exactly why I won't be buying this book.A pity because the Reeves-Stevens Treklit is usually most enjoyable.Perhaps I'm being unfair but the "cadets in peril" sub-genre drives me nuts.
Mabe the R-S's should turn their attention to the second 5 year mission era.

I recently finished it and have my doubts about some details and characterizations.

It was a decent take off on a dime store "whodoneit."

Good for some light entertainment, I thought the 17 yr. old Kirk was out of character. But, while the book was not great, it was not a total waste of time either.

The ending was.......... unique.

Towards the end, we did get glimpses of Jimmy as James T. Kirk. But just glimpses.
