The book Star Trek Academy: Collision Course is out. I just got email from my library saying they have it in. So I'll be reading it sometime starting this week.

I picked up my airfreighted copy of this and "The Sky's the Limit" in Sydney (Galaxy) last week. So any international comic shop which orders via the Diamond Orderpak would have them with last week's batch of comics.

I don't want to offend anyone who likes these books, but I just read Steve's review, and all I can say is... wow now I know that I've made the right decision by skipping the Shatnerverse books. That sounds like waaayyy to many ridiculous situations for me to accept in one book.

fun but preposterous superKirk novel.

I thought the previous ones stayed within the realm of conceivability for Star Trek, but the end of this one went too far for me to call it 'great' considering his age and position.

As for the set up, was anyone else reminded of Mahoney and Jones in Police Acadamy?

You mean... teenage Spock was making sound effects with his voice?
Indeed :vulcan:

...not what I meant.

are troubled young men who meet when they get in trouble with the law and their best option is to join the academy. For Kirk, it has a lot to do with a girl and Spock is a little odd

^ Unlikely. It may, however, contradict Michael Jan Friedman's trilogy. :)

Does anyone know if the "Jimmy Kirk on Tarsus IV" backstory in "Collision Course" is consistent with what Shatner and the Reeves-Stevenses wrote in "Avenger"?

Nothing jumped out at me as being terribly off. Collision Course details the day to day ordeal on Tarsus IV, while Avenger IIRC was more about the politics of the event and just swooped in to rescue Jimmy Kirk at the end.

the trees that died to make this book, though, sad. . . sad

^^The trees would've been torn down anyway -- if the book hadn't been published, then the paper already made from those trees would've just been purchased by someone else to be used for other purposes. It's not like book printers cut down their own trees.

I just started reading it and have some doubts as to how well it fits into TOS continuity.
Is it now customary to put historical reference to ST:ENT into TOS novels?

^ Why wouldn't it be? The events of ENT are only a century or so off from the timeframe of TOS and were of considerable historical significance. (Compare, for instance, how often TOS references appear in 24th century literature.)

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

Is this going to be made into a audio book? I only read Ashes of Eden in the print, but just finished listening to the rest of them on tape/cd.

Is it fair to assume that the "young Kirk/Spock" movie that's in the works will contradict Shatner's "young Kirk/Spock" novel?
