Went to see Wrath of Khan in NYC last night and it - was - AWESOME! Holy crap, seeing it on the Big Screen after 30 years was an amazing experience. They ran the scratchiest, junkiest, spliced filled film print I ever saw and it was glorious! Great to see it on 35mm film.
I wasn't expecting too many people, but boy, am I glad I got there early. The place was packed. Lots of interesting people, some very cool, others - well, the Trekkie stereotype isn't all that wrong, sadly (Sheldon from Big Bang Theory has got to be based on a guy I saw there...seriously). But everyone was totally into it.
The upshot, though, was that it was almost like going back to opening night in 1982. They ran a genuine film print, rather than from a digital source (yes, Regula 1 is brown), the audience was completely into it, cheering, clapping, laughing throughout. Yet there was DEAD SILENCE from the point McCoy tells Kirk to come to engineering all the way to Kirk and David's conversation. This was a great audience to see it with.
It was also the only classic Trek cast movie I had never seen in the theater with my sister. We remedied that last night.
Amazing night. It's running again tonight at midnight, so if you're in the area... GO!
