Superman

Fleet Captain
I know the point of the new Star Trek film isn't really about pleasing me. I'm a life-long fan. I'm thirty-two years old. The demo they're aiming for is people my students' age, in the fifteen to seventeen range, and probably even a little younger.

That said, I'd been hopeful for a long time that Trek XI would be the best of both worlds: faithful to TOS, but also bringing some new material to the table, much as the really good Trek novels have done.

However, having seen the Enterprise and read some truly spoileriffic details, I'm now convinced this isn't the Star Trek I loved, even with Nimoy's presence and "blessing."

Spoilers from here on out.

*Kirk isn't even in the Academy, but EVERYONE else from TOS is? Please. Absolute bullshit, contradicted by a number of references in TOS. This just doesn't work.

*Pike is the first captain of the Enterprise? Not a big problem, really. But the ENTIRE TOS cast serving aboard the Enterprise under Pike? No Piper? Sulu in command? Fucking Chekov, too? Are you kidding me?

*The thirteen or so years between "The Cage" and TOS gone. Not only that, but it would seem, "The Cage" gone as well. If anything, Abrams could've avoided this by just making the Enterprise...

*...NOT BRAND NEW WHEN KIRK COMES ABOARD!!! Are you serious? Really? The Enterprise was over a decade old when Kirk took command. That's canon, not the supposition of the novels.

*The Enterprise herself. Wow, what a fucking monstrosity. Absolutely horrible. The engineering hull is a disaster, and the nacelles? Really? That's what "folks who are fresh to Trek" came up with? Didn't anyone on Abrams' team consider looking here (Vektor, etc) and elsewhere (Koerner) for inspiration?

Bottom-line, I think the cast looks too young, too pretty, and just too out of place. Add to that a storyline that's flying at warp speed with canon and logic, and THE science fiction starship needlessly and messily "reimagined," and you have this...

...I'm not going see Star Trek XI. Today's reveals were the last straw.

And as for Star Trek in general, I've accepted that there will be no new Trek for me any more. I'm sure the novels will continue, along with the comics, but eventually, even they'll be made to align with the new "Abramsverse" of the film.

I have my TOS DVD sets and my DVDs of the TOS films. That's all I really need, and it really won't get any better than that, anyway.

Does anyone else feel this way?

By the way mods, this IS a Gen. Trek topic. It has to do not only with Trek XI, but also, with Trek in general. If you don't want to see this movie, Trek as you know it is essentially gone. This movie seeks to replace it.

That's where I'm going with this: Old Trek vs. New Trek.

The old "Star Trek" has been dead since "Enterprise" was cancelled in 2005.

So we have a new one.

"Star Trek" is dead. Long live "Star Trek." :)

False dichotomy. There is no old or new Trek; there is only one Trek.

No reboot. No restart. No reimagining. Just one.

I fucking well don't CARE if it looks different. It's still the same.

I do.
Right now, I'm trying to get Roberto Orci to admit it's a reboot of some sort over at DonMurphy.net.
I just got a message from him trying to explain to me how an alternate timeline doesn't ruin what came before.

^It's bad enough to be criticized about your work once it hits the public, but to be criticized before it comes out must be f'ing unbearable. So far these gents have been taking the punches with grace.

Actually, someone at Aint It Cool News asked Bob Orci in a Talkback whether the brutality of the reactions to what's being revealed was tough to take. He replied that he'd expected much worse and thinks that the filmmakers are getting treated pretty gently so far.

He's treating you with admirable respect and patience, all things considered. Man's a bloody saint.

All I want is for him to admit it's some form of reboot.
Like I said in the other thread like this, EJO was decent enough to warn fans of the old BSG about the new one.

^ He's not going to say that, whether it actually is or isn't. It's about PR as much as anything else.

^^Good heavens! Get a grip and get over it! None of us CARE if you want someone famous to tell you it is a reboot. Either watch it or don't. At least the OP is honest about why he doesn't want to see the new movie. I can respect that for him and others Star Trek is dead.
For the rest of us, we can't wait until May to see what JJ & Co. came up with!
Star Trek is dead. Long live Star Trek. Live long and prosper, JJ & Co.

Only if it's successful. If it flops, someone will probably chalk it up to "overly dramatic changes alienating the fans of the original" or something, and maybe a wave of TOS nostalgia would follow. Who knows?

I happen to agree with what the OP said.
