What do you think? Should the next Star Trek movie be filmed in 3D?

Here´s what JJ Abrams had to say about it:

Q: Any chance of you shooting the next Star Trek film in 3-D?
Abrams: Paramount talked to me about doing the first one in 3-D and, having it only be my second film, I was petrified just at the addition of it. I thought it would be another dimension of pain-in-the-ass. I was just like, "I want to make a decent 2-D movie." I was so worried that, instead of being a decent 2-D movie, it would have been a bad 3-D one. I'm open to looking at it ‘cause now I feel a little bit more comfortable. And, if I, in fact, direct the Star Trek sequel, 3-D could be really fun, so I'm open to it. What I've seen of Avatar makes me want to do it because it's so crazy-cool looking.

i haven't seen any of the new live action 3D films only animated ('UP' and the stop animation "coraline"). so only people who've seen what is possible with Beowulf and Final Destination (movie released August 2009) know what it would look like.
I'm all for it though as it would still work in2D...
Seeing the bridge of Enterprise in3D would be cool though.

We might find out what happens when you shine a flashlight in one of those 3D lens setups.

Usually, if given the option I go see it in 3-D but I work at a theater so I get it for free. If I had to pay the full price I probably wouldn't since it usually isn't that impressive. I've only seen animated movies in 3-D so I dunno what a live action kind of 3-D would look like.

I'd prefer not to see Trek in 3-D. Shoot it in full IMAX instead.

I'd like to see it -- I think it would be cool.

Now, having said that, there should be two versions of the film in theaters -- one 3D, one not -- as they seem to do most of the time anyway with 3D releases.

That way, "people with vision problems" can go see it in 2D if they so choose...

why would he make the sequel in 3d just wondering
The buzz in Hollywood is shooting in 3-D for the past year. In December Avalon is going to really reinforce that with box office results. Exhibitor charge more for a 3D screening. It also gives studios the ability to release in the future a 3D Bluray as well as 2D Bluray and DVD, and downloadable films (iTunes, Amazon, etc.)
All of Pixars's pipeline is 3D films for the next couple years. This past year the Jonas Brothers film and Hannah Montana films were in 3D and had a limited time in the cinema. This allows studios to make it a special limited engagement if they want to. (No I'm not comparing Trek to those concert HD films. no flames needed...)

I prefer Trek to be about story not the "wow" factor, if they did 3D I would prefer if it was an afterthought and not let it interfere with the story being told on screen.

Uh, no thanks.

I don't want Star Trek 12 in 3D at all.

So, because you don't want it you'd want to deprive others of seeing in 3D even though they usually release a 3D and NON-3D version of the films at the same time?

Why?

I want to see a 3D Trek. You go see the 2D version on another screen in the theater.

With regard to the so-called "Wow factor". That only comes into play when the film is a gimmick. If they approach it the story the same way they always do but shoot it for 3D, it shouldn't matter...I agree the 3D should be an afterthought.

I would love Star Trek in 3D! But they shouldn´t change the cinematography at all for that. But I don´t think it would be an afterthought if it happens.

The interesting question is...wich 3D format should they use? I would strongly prefer them using RealD instead of IMAX 3D......RealD has much less ghosting then IMAX 3D. And there are much more theaters equipped for RealD then for IMAX 3D anyway..since all you need for projecting RealD is a regular digital projection system and a "polarisation device" wich you put in front of the projectors lense.
