ST XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet (H. Mudd?)

It looks like it's still early and nothing has been written or decided.

"We had about a 15-minute to half-hour discussion with the whole gang and went off on our separate ways," says Orci. "We're still in the re-reading and taking it all in phase before we actually sit down and start designing [the film]."

"We have to comb through everything and make sure that we leave no stone unturned because that was the approach that I think we were looking for on the first movie," says Kurtzman.
And some other interesting bits

  • The phrase "He's dead, Jim" will likely show up in part two.
  • Frequent Abrams guest star Greg Grunberg has started a campaign to play classic Trek comedic villain Harry Mudd.
  • As previously reported, fellow Abrams collaborator (and producer on the first film) Damon Lindelof will join the writing team for the sequel. Of the writing method, Orci explains, "We're going to come up with a story together, obviously in consultation with J.J. and [executive producer] Bryan Burk. And then we're going to write it up together, the story, us and Damon. And then Alex and I will write the script."
  • And no, Khan did not even come up during the conversation!

dont what no harry mudd is the new movie, wont be the same as the one from the original episodes.

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

Actually, on a "please the general audience" level, Harry Mudd (and some Tribbles?) would provide the comedic relief. It is either that or Scotty's sidekick... :p

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

When do you think they will start going into pre production?

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

Harry Mudd would work as a background/supporting character in a semi-comedic subplot for comic relief...but as a lead or even a "villain"?

Hell, no.

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

Or he could just get a couple of minutes of screen time as a nod and have nothing serious to do with the plot.

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

I could see Harry Mudd showing up on the scene in a damaged cargo ship or in his own personal spacecraft needing help from the passing Enterprise...but he's carrying illicit cargo.

:techman: i LIKE that idea! Those little eggs make my inner geek very happy!

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

I like Harry, but it would be hard to inject Harry Mudd into a dead serious plot. Thanks for the link, Salvor!

Heck, i'd be happy even if we just saw him pass by in the background at a space station, or something like that.

i am so easily amused.....

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

Thank the lord that Khan wasn't even brought up

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

I guess there are a few of us who don't want Khan, then.

Re: Star Trek XII : Orci & Kurtzman still reading, not designing yet

I would love to see Harry Mudd show up as a sidebar, but not as a main villain. That would just be silly.

How about Khan done right?
Maybe; I'd have to see it. I like STIII and IV as well as I do STII, though Montalban made a wonderful character, and I'm fond of the actor. I'm ambivalent about a Khan story. I don't particularly like the Augments episodes or Soong either.

Already been done, so no.
I still think Faran Tahir would make a badass, awesome Khan.:techman: As for Harry Mudd, I would rather have him as the comic relief sidebar. This would let Simon Pegg's Scotty develop a more serious character (hopefully).
