A heads-up for those living in Southern California: the Los Angeles Philharmonic will be presenting the first Abramsverse film, with the score performed live, July 8-9 at Hollywood Bowl, giving early kickoffs to the "Friday 2" and "Saturday 2" subscription series. David Newman will be conducting.

Season subscriptions are already on sale, I believe; individual performances go on sale May 1st.

Last year, they did both 2001 and ET with the scores performed live (the latter in lieu of the usual live appearance by John Williams), and both were well worth the ticket price.

Also this season at the Bowl: Dudamel will be conducting this year's Tchaikovsky Spectacular on August 5th and 6th, and John Williams is currently slated to conduct the second half of this year's "John Willams Night" (with David Newman conducting the first half) on September 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

I will also note that seeing 2001 with the score performed live gave me a better understanding of where some of the weirder sounds in the Ligeti pieces came from (at one point, it calls for two people to directly manipulate the strings of a piano).

My mom totally laughed at me because when the symphony started playing the opening horn piece with the bad robot logo she saw I had goose bumps. This bit:

I'd really love to see the 09 movie the same way but it's never been close enough. Last time I had to travel to San Antonio. I've seen that some of the 09's they done have had choirs too.

Those all sound like good programs, and Dudamel conducting anything is worth seeing.

Just went to see Star Trek Live at the Hollywood bowl and it was absolutely amazing!!!!! The choir was massive, orchestra phenomenal and the conductor was David Newman (not Dudamel). David does several of the Bowl's concerts that feature anything live to picture. I smiled so much my face hurt, the crowd had a great time and cheered at the heroics, booed and the bad guys and laughed at everything and I could go to that concert every nite! So much fun!

I had the chance to go to the bowl last week and met Michael Giacchino. It was awesome and the soundtrack sounds absolutely incredible in person, you can feels its energy! And yes - people were cheering all over, even my girlfriend, she was out of control! Loved it!
