Spoilers ST Very Short Treks - Starships & Technology Discussion

These Short(er) Treks are explicitly non-canon per the trailer, and go across assorted timelines and continuities, and are served up with a healthy dose of artistic license. Continuity is a suggestion, and if we're lucky one of these may approach the technological sensibilities of the existing Short Treks.

So spoilers, I guess?

We could point out all the visual inconsistencies in “Holiday Party” but that would be basically counterproductive.

However, it’s worth pointing out the (most likely not temporally-displaced in the context of this story) Saru notes that the just-cleaved USS Europa had 6000 souls aboard. If remotely true, it would make that ship the most densely packed ship of any era of the franchise. It also puts the canonical total death toll of 8000 in that battle into stark perspective.

So it probably isn’t remotely true. But out of respect, please stay to the end of the “In memoriam”.

There were several Altonians on board though, and in their culture they believe that every being hosts a thousand souls of family that came before them. Saru was just being culturally sensitive. ;)

I think they made an actual mistake here. Here’s the quote in question:

“My cousin was on the Europa when it went down. She and eight thousand others are dead because of you.”

The 8,000 people were clearly the total lives lost in the battle, not actually the crew complement of the Europa. Saru’s quote in the VST (which was something he never said originally) was that 6,000 people died on the Europa. The writers clearly took the above quote out of context by accident (and got the count wrong to boot), because it’s simply ridiculous to think that one ship had 6,000 people and every other ship in that battle only had 2,000 people combined.

Well, I SUPPOSE a takeaway from 0x03 is that we've re-introduced the not-holodeck from TAS "The Practical Joker" and solidly placed it as a holodeck equivalent, at least narratively. Said "Recreation Room" is not known for holo characters per se though, so it's a teeny bit of an explainable slip even if the TNG holodeck was introduced as a wonder of modern technology at the time.

the holodeck like room the Xyrillian's had in ENT "Unexpected" had basically the same capabilities, including the inability to make characters. presumably the TNG holodecks represented an improvement in the quality of the simulations (possibly due to the inclusion of replicators into the forcefields and hologram set up, as well as just better computing?) which the upgrades in TNG "11001001" made even more capable?

There is a part of me that thinks early Holodecks were skin light like the TAS life support belts.

Walk into a Holodecks without being part of the program...and you see crewmates suspended in the air, surrounded by a bubble which has a ghost like halo.

That crewman in a forest--you see a skin-tight field that shows trees, but the rest of the Holodeck is blank from your point of view.

By TNG---you get an actual environment.

The level of detail, especially within the people and environment, were considered far more impressive than just the holographic display. The holodeck also appeared to have nearly unlimited capability in terms of generation a believable facsimile of reality, while the rec room had limits.

Of course, no one thought to limit it in a way that won't actually kill people.

It came up again this week, where Scotty and Tendi debate what's in a name. :)

As for the rest of the episode... I guess TOS uniforms may be kept up with belts? What did the actors wear to keep the trousers up, anyway? I don't recall any belts whenever we saw a male character with his shirt off.

And... I guess female Caitians may have bras? Without sounding too pedantic, how is that comfortable when it brushes your fur the wrong way? Or a uniform overall, really? Maybe that's why she doesn't wear boots? Dr. T'Ana does.
