ST TMP in HD?

I've heard before that the Director's Edition had its new FX done in SD, and that's why it's only been available as such. I just bought it on Zune, and I'm wondering when or if it would ever be made available in HD.

Honestly, if the Director's Edition is going to be made in HD, it's going to require a complete restoration of the film. The look of TMP in the director's edition is, I'm sorry to say, very ugly looking compared to the theatrical edition on BluRay. The sequence on Vulcan is greatly cleaned up and the contrast in the space footage is like light and day.

Believe me, nothing would make this Trekkie more happier if they were to do an HD version of the film. I just hope the team who handled the project are still willing to do it after they all took different routes.

Well, it wouldn't have to be them, necessarily. It was said that they designed all the new sequences so they could be rendered at film quality. Ideally, they'd be able to reset all the compositing to the higher resolution as well, so it'd just be a matter of rerendering and swapping out the old versions. Of course, having seen that Enterprise model in high resolution prints in the intervening decade, I can say film quality in 2000 is not half as good as even some TV quality in 2009. They'd probably want to do some additional tweaking if they wanted to do it right (ha!), but it should theoretically be possible to just pull the old files out of the archives and up-res the lot of it.

I think the Blu-Ray version of TMP looks absolutely spectacular, though it does contain only the original effects.

The ST2 Blu-Ray does not contain the extended scenes either, even though none of those scenes contain effects shots. It would be a simple matter for them to include, but they didn't.
