ST: Beyond Parental advice - scenes to prepare for...

I was wondering if someone could post, as spoiler free as possible, scenes that parents might have concerns about in the movie, so we can be prepared to cover eyes or take a bathroom break or whatever.

I know that PG-13 can mean a wide range.so that the Avengers (the first) was fairly kid friendly...but X-Men Apocalypse had some throat-slitting scenes that were just way too scary for younger kids.

I'd like to be prepared...so any cues to cover eyes would be appreciated.
We're planning to go Sunday, but probably won't check this message that day).

I honestly can't remember anything that was "cover your kid's eyes" worthy.
But I'm not a parent yet, so others may know best.

Parent of three here. Other than a few (*very* few) swear words, there's nothing in this movie that I would consider inappropriate for them at any age. The violence is probably what gets them most of the PG-13 rating, and it's not bloody violence, nothing more than Avengers had. And no cover-your-eyes sexy scenes either.

It's not thaat graphic, but there are some very gruesome deaths implied.
Not sure how I can describe them without spoilers, though.

Just how young are your kids that they can't take some throat slitting scenes?

If it's implied but not graphically shown...should be OK... could you perhaps describe the scene or the characters (like say, first time Jayla meets Scotty).. that could help...just so I am aware

5 and 11 (and the 11 year old is pretty sensitive to things)

I appreciate everyone's input.. this helps. I didn't like the X-Men surprise (because we invited a friend who ALSO had a 5 year old girl with her)..

So good to know. A couple of critics have mentioned that this kinda feels like an extended Star Trek episode... wat do you think? (ANd how did you like it overall)

I don't know why anyone would take a five year old to movies like Star Trek, The Avengers or X-Men in the first place ... eleven years should be old enough to understand that it's just a movie, but that depends on the individual I think.

Because it's not worth a babysiiter (cost & time)...and I was 5 when I saw TMP in theaters (after seeing the show)...though I thought THAT movie was boring

Well, the one scene that really gets under the skin is in the middle of the film somewhere. the bad guy shows a couple crewmembers a chamber and someone gets left behind in there. What follows is not exactly pretty.

I don't care one way or the other, I just don't understand how anyone could take a five year old into this kind of movie. Not because of violence or sex, but because a five year old probably wouldn't have the slightest idea what's going on.

It seems that PG-13 is the magic bucket that producers dump their movies into in order to be most profitable. It is very broad and imprecise. I mean, it's hard to believe that "The Dark Knight" and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" should have the same age rating. Should the MPAA complicate things further with a PG-15 rating? Other countries have an age 15 category in their movie ratings systems.

I am now staying away from this forum until I see STB, to avoid any accidental spoilers.

I took my 5 & 7 year-old daughters, and they loved it! The first Star Trek movie I remember seeing in the theatre is TUC when I was 5. Star Trek is a family tradition for me, they're never too young.
