Squirrel imitates Star Trek Communicator-did the show record squirrel?

Hi. While at the zoo my partner and I filmed a squirrel that chirped like the Star Trek Communicator. We've uploaded some videos because it made us laugh: http://youtu.be/nRp6gwJo8cc and original: http://youtu.be/fZqcmi6k_fM
Do any of you know whether the original sound effects people recorded squirrel for the communicators in the original series.
