Spoilers - please resolve a question.

I'm sure Spock Prime used said shuttle to return himself to earth. You can see it in the backround when he meets his younger self.

So the shuttle doesn't actually go anywhere?

It looked really dilapidated, I doubt it could fly.

Scotty said with the exception of the shields, the shuttle craft is OK to fly. (or something to that effect).

Oh, ok
Well there is no way it could catch up to a starship at warp anyway, right?
I think some shuttles had warp in TOS, but it didn't look like any of the shuttles in the new movie did.

Well Spock could update it with transwarp or a slipstream drive or some shit from his time and it could have caught up no problem.

Keep in mind that the Enterprise went to Saturn, then to the undisclosed location where the Jellyfish ship faced the Narada. Leaves plenty of time for the shuttle craft to join Earth.
Besides, when he's talking to Spock Prime, Young Spock is wearing a jumpsuit, not his blue uniform (indicating that time may have passed). It still gives plenty of time for Spock Prime to reach Earth.
